Chapter 13 - THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS

The fire department contained the blaze before it destroyed Warehouse 909 completely.

Most of the building was empty, but investigators found rows of steel cabinets behind a false wall. The files inside had been damaged by smoke and water.

One cabinet survived.

The silver key opened it.

Inside were shipping invoices, property deeds and confidential loan agreements belonging to Aster Vale Holdings.

Claire also found a photograph of her father shaking hands with Arthur Vale.

Standing behind them was the stranger from the photograph with Damian.

His name appeared on several documents.

Victor Hale.

Before Claire could investigate him, Victor appeared at Rowan Meridian headquarters.

He arrived without an appointment and waited calmly inside the glass conference room overlooking the city.

He was in his early fifties, dressed in a charcoal suit, with the relaxed expression of a man who believed every door would eventually open for him.

“I came to help,” Victor said.

“You came because the warehouse survived.”

His smile barely changed.

Victor explained that his investment company controlled several of Rowan Meridian’s largest loans. If news of the missing forty-two million dollars became public, the lenders could demand immediate repayment.

Rowan Meridian would collapse within weeks.

“Unless,” Victor continued, “you accept new financing from me.”

Claire studied the contract he placed on the table.

Victor would provide emergency funds in exchange for three board seats and temporary authority over company restructuring.

It was not a rescue.

It was a takeover.

“You knew about Aster Vale,” Claire said.

“I know many things your father chose not to tell you.”

“My father is dead.”

“Yes,” Victor replied. “That makes his secrets much more expensive.”

Claire pushed the contract back toward him.

Victor rose.

Before leaving, he stopped beside the glass wall.

“You defeated a cruel husband, Claire. That made you popular.”

He turned toward her.

“But defeating the people who created him will make you dangerous.”
