"Then one night, I said I wanted to visit my sister for the weekend," she continued. "And that was the night I understood what the rules were for." Her eyes held mine. "I won't go into it. You know."
"I know," I said softly.
"I left three weeks later. I had forty-three dollars, one coat, and a bus ticket to Tucson. I went to a sheriff's office in the next county before I got on the bus, because I thought if I told the truth to someone in a uniform, they'd keep me safe." She laughed once, dryly. "The deputy listened for about four minutes. He said it sounded like a family matter and that I should go home and talk it out. He filed a report anyway. I don't think he thought it would matter."
"It matters now," said Harris from the doorway. I hadn't noticed him arrive.
Lena nodded. Her hands were shaking around her teacup. "I never filed for divorce. I know that sounds crazy. But to file, I had to put down my address, and the papers get mailed to the other person, and I was terrified he'd find me. So I told myself I'd wait until I felt safer. Then it was a year. Then it was three." Her voice cracked. "I'm sorry. I let a piece of paper keep me quiet, and because I stayed quiet, you were standing in that house."
"Lena," I said. "Stop."
She looked up.
"You escaped with forty-three dollars," I said. "You were twenty-three years old. You went to the police, and they turned you away, and you still got on that bus and built a life. That isn't a failure. That's the bravest thing I've ever heard."
She pressed her hand over her mouth. Josie quietly passed her a tissue and then, without a word, put a second one in my hand.
"How did you find out about me?" I asked, after a while.
"Two years ago I was searching the county newspaper's website, which I do sometimes when I can't sleep, like scratching at a scab. And there was a small wedding announcement. Ethan Calloway and Claire Bennett." She smiled sadly. "There was a photo. You were laughing. You looked so happy, Claire. You looked like somebody who'd been handed a gift and didn't know yet what was inside the box."
May you like
She lifted the lid of the shoebox.
"I wrote to you," she said. "Three times. I wrote a letter, and I put it in an envelope, and I got your address off the property records. And every single time, I stood at the mailbox and I couldn't do it. I thought, she'll think I'm a jealous ex. She'll show it to Ethan. He'll find me. So I put them back in the box." Tears slid down her cheeks. "I'm so sorry. I've kept them all this time. I don't know why. I think I always hoped I'd get to hand them to you in person."
