Chapter 1 - The Call His Mistress Should Never Have Answered

My billionaire husband let his mistress answer my call while I was collapsing alone on the floor of our Manhattan penthouse. She told me, “He doesn’t want to talk to you,” and hung up. Minutes later, an emergency alert hit his phone with my name on it—and for the first time in years, the man who controlled companies, buildings, and entire boardrooms realized there was one thing his money couldn’t control.

My name is Elena Romano.

For seven years, I had been married to Victor Romano, one of New York’s most powerful billionaires.

He owned luxury hotels, investment firms, real estate companies, and private clubs across several states. People waited weeks for meetings with him.

I used to get a phone call just because he missed my voice.

That night, I got nothing.

At 7:12 p.m., Victor texted:

Late meeting. Don’t wait up.

I had already made dinner.

Again.

By the time the pain started, I was standing barefoot in our kitchen, staring at food that had gone cold.

At first, I thought it was indigestion.

Then the pressure in my chest sharpened.

I grabbed the counter.

The room tilted.

“Okay,” I whispered.

But it wasn’t okay.

My body was failing faster than I could understand.

I called Victor.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

A third time.

Still nothing.

By the fourth call, I was on the floor.

My hand shook so badly I could barely hold the phone.

Then someone answered.

“Victor’s phone.”

A woman.

My heart dropped.

Every suspicion I had buried for six months suddenly had a voice.

“Victor?”

“He’s unavailable.”

“Please…” I struggled to breathe. “Put him on.”

There was a pause.

Then she said, almost sweetly, “He doesn’t want to talk to you.”

The line went dead.

Across town, Selena Vale was still wearing my husband’s white dress shirt when she ended the call.

Victor stared at her.

“What the hell was that?”

She shrugged. “She’s your wife, not your parole officer.”

Then his phone lit up.

Not with my name.

With a red emergency notification from Mercy Harbor Medical Center.

ELENA ROMANO. PATIENT RECEIVED THROUGH ER. CONDITION CRITICAL.

Victor went completely still.

Another alert followed.

PATIENT FOUND UNCONSCIOUS. POSSIBLE CARDIAC EVENT.

Later, he would tell me my voice replayed in his head.

Please… put him on.

And then Selena’s answer.

He doesn’t want to talk to you.

Twenty-three minutes earlier, building security had forced their way into the penthouse after I managed to trigger the emergency button.

By then, I was barely conscious.

The last thing I remembered was pounding at the door.

Then darkness.

Victor drove through the rain like a man trying to outrun what he had done.

Selena called twice.

He rejected both calls.

At the hospital, he didn’t wait for the elevator.

He ran up the stairs.

“My wife,” he said to the first nurse he saw. “Elena Romano.”

The nurse checked her computer.

“Room eight. Cardiology is with her.”

Victor’s face tightened.

“What happened?”

The nurse looked at him carefully.

May you like

Then toward the closed emergency-room door.

And when she answered, whatever color remained in his face disappeared.
