Chapter 1

My husband stood there and watched his mistress pour a mysterious white powder into my wine, then she smiled and dared me to drink it. They thought humiliating me was the fun part of their little trap. What Daniel had forgotten was that before I became his quiet wife, I was a prosecutor, and they had just contaminated my drink in front of the one woman who knew exactly how to preserve the evidence.

I was behind the velvet curtain outside our dining room when I saw Vanessa empty a tiny white packet into my glass.

The powder disappeared into the red wine.

Daniel stood beside her.

“Is that enough?” he whispered.

Vanessa smiled.

“More than enough.”

Every instinct in me screamed to confront them.

I didn’t.

For three months, I’d been quietly investigating my husband.

Unexplained withdrawals had led me to a forensic accountant. He found hotel bills, jewelry purchases, a second apartment, and finally Vanessa.

Daniel’s precious “executive assistant.”

I already had enough to destroy his lies in divorce court.

But this was different.

I stepped into the room.

Daniel went pale.

Vanessa recovered first.

She lifted my glass and held it toward me.

“Drink.”

I stared at the wine.

“What did you put in it?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“Relax, sis. You can’t drink?”

Daniel muttered her name in warning, but she kept smiling.

“Maybe one glass will finally make you interesting.”

I walked toward her.

Slowly.

Vanessa expected anger.

Instead, I took out my phone.

Her smile faltered.

“Put the glass down,” I said.

“What?”

“On the table. Now.”

Something in my voice made Daniel freeze.

Vanessa set it down.

I photographed the glass.

Then the bottle.

Then the silver spoon.

Finally, I photographed the torn white packet lying beside Vanessa’s hand.

Daniel suddenly understood.

He lunged toward it.

I stepped between him and the table.

“Touch that packet,” I said quietly, “and I’ll make sure everyone knows you tried to destroy evidence.”

His face changed.

Vanessa stared at me.

“You’re insane.”

“No.”

I looked directly at my husband.

“I’m finally paying attention.”

Then I dialed 911.

Daniel whispered, “Claire, don’t do this.”

That almost made me laugh.

Because Daniel had spent years treating me like a harmless, obedient wife.

Apparently, he had forgotten who I was before I married him.

I had been a prosecutor.

May you like

And while Vanessa stood frozen beside my untouched wine, Daniel stared at the phone in my hand and finally realized something terrifying.

Their little trap had just become my evidence.
