Chapter 10 - DAWN OVER THE HUDSON

The sun rose slowly over the Hudson River the next morning, burning away the remnants of the storm and casting a brilliant, golden light across the manicured lawns of Blackthorne House.

The damage to the foyer was already being repaired by an army of contractors and staff, but inside the family quarters, everything was quiet and peaceful.

I sat on the edge of the plush sofa in the sunroom, wearing a soft gray sweater, a warm mug of coffee cradled between my hands. My shoulder was still stiff, but the pain had dulled to a manageable ache.

The door opened softly, and Caleb walked in, holding a freshly drawn picture of a knight standing beside a castle, beneath a bright yellow sun. He walked straight over to me and held it out.

"For you," he said quietly, a shy smile on his face. "Dad said you're officially part of the team now."

I smiled, taking the drawing from his small hands. "Thank you, Caleb. That's the best picture you've drawn yet."

Footsteps echoed softly behind us, and I turned my head to see Dominic walking into the room. He had changed into a simple black button-down shirt, the sleeves rolled up, looking less like a syndicate warlord and more like a man finally at peace in his own home.

He stopped beside the sofa, looking down at both of us with those intense, slate-gray eyes that now held a warmth I had never expected to see.

"The federal marshals confirmed Julian's network has been entirely dismantled," Dominic said, his voice smooth and steady. "His assets are frozen, his associates are behind bars, and your name remains legally buried in the government archives. You are completely safe, Vivienne."

I looked up at him, feeling the last remnants of fear dissolve into the morning air. "And Mara Ellis?"

Dominic’s lips curved into a faint, rare smile. "Mara Ellis can take a permanent vacation. We have no more use for ghosts in this house."

He reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering mine where it rested on the sofa cushion. His thumb brushed softly over my knuckles.

"Unless," Dominic added, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling murmur that sent a shiver straight down my spine, "you decide you want to stay—not as a housekeeper hiding from her past, but as something a lot more permanent."

Caleb looked up from his drawing, his eyes darting between Dominic and me with a knowing, conspiratorial grin. "Yeah, Mara! You should stay forever. Dad is much nicer when you're around."

I looked at the little boy who had pulled me out of the dark, and then up at the dangerous, terrifying man who had built an empire just to keep his world safe. The shadows of Blackthorne House no longer felt like a prison. They felt like home.

May you like

I smiled, squeezing Dominic's hand back.

"I think," I whispered softly, "I'm finally right where I belong."
