Chapter 7 - Learning to Deserve Trust

The first stage took eighteen months. Some proceedings continued longer.

There were lawyers.

Investigations.

Headlines.

Court appearances.

Nico surrendered control of several businesses and testified in cases involving Arthur’s network and parts of his own father’s organization.

Cooperation did not erase his own offenses. A plea agreement required restitution, forfeiture, a period in custody, and court supervision.

He lost money.

He lost friends.

Arthur was later convicted on charges arising from Evelyn’s confinement and the threats used to silence witnesses. The old explosion remained part of the wider case review. His power did not follow him into prison.

Three men who had once called themselves brothers stopped taking his calls when there was no longer profit in loyalty.

Ben stayed.

So did Evelyn.

Mara did not immediately begin a relationship with Nico.

She wanted an apology followed by decisions she could see, not a romance built around gratitude.

An independent consumer-law attorney reviewed Arthur’s debt packet. Most of the medical bills belonged to Daniel’s estate, not to Mara, and the claim that one company owned every account was false. Mara arranged a manageable plan for the loans she had actually taken out herself.

First she returned to college part-time and took work outside the Marcelli household. Qualified interpreters continued to handle Evelyn’s medical and legal appointments, while Deaf instructors taught the family’s ongoing ASL classes.

Nico offered to pay.

She refused.

Evelyn offered.

Mara refused again.

Ben suggested asking the university about additional grants.

Mara told him she had already made an appointment with the financial-aid office.

He looked delighted to discover she was three steps ahead of him.

Eventually she used her father’s small education fund, which she had kept untouched, together with a scholarship and paid, supervised interpreting placements.

Three years after walking into Booth Seven, she completed her interpreting degree. Professional certification followed after the required assessments.

Evelyn sat in the first row at graduation.

Nico sat beside her.

When Mara’s name was called, Evelyn stood and signed applause with both hands high in the air.

Nico did too.

So did Ben.

Then an entire row of people around them copied the movement without knowing what it meant.

Mara laughed all the way across the stage.

By then, Mara and Nico had been dating for more than a year. Their first dinner had happened after his release, when she was no longer his employee and was studying and working through an independent agency.

He asked her to choose the restaurant. She chose somewhere small, with terrible parking and no private room.

They talked about classes, Evelyn’s paintings, and the counseling Nico had begun. Sometimes they talked about difficult things. Neither mistook one good evening for a repaired life.

Trust returned gradually. He kept appointments. Accepted refusals. Told the truth even when it embarrassed him. She learned that loving him did not require becoming responsible for his rehabilitation.

They disagreed. Apologized. Tried again. That was the relationship she eventually chose.
