Chapter 4

The weeks that followed were difficult.

Not because I regretted what I had done.

I didn’t.

But because Clara had spent so long believing she had to endure everything quietly.

She kept apologizing for things that weren’t her fault.

She apologized when she needed rest.

She apologized when Toby needed something.

She even apologized when I brought her breakfast in bed.

One morning, I sat beside her and took her hand.

“You don’t have to apologize anymore.”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“I thought you would blame me.”

“For what?”

“For causing problems between you and your family.”

I shook my head.

“You didn’t cause anything, Clara.

You revealed it.”

She cried then.

Not because she was afraid.

Because, for the first time in months, she finally felt safe.

Three weeks later, our daughter was born.

A healthy little girl.

We named her Grace.

When I held her for the first time, I remembered Toby’s stale piece of bread.

I remembered Clara’s bruised wrist.

I remembered that storage room.

And I made myself a promise.

My children would grow up knowing something very important:

Family was never about who shared your last name.

Family was about who protected you when you were vulnerable.

May you like

Who stayed when life became difficult.

Who made room for you at the table instead of pushing you away from it.
