Chapter 2

Had my son really chosen his father because he believed I couldn't give him a future? Or had he said those words because he was trying to protect me from something he couldn't explain?

I reached for my phone and called the only person who might help me understand the documents. Before I could finish explaining, he went silent, then asked one chilling question: “Did Harrison find out that Tyler gave you the card?”

My blood ran cold. Because at that exact moment, another message appeared on my screen—from Harrison himself.

**“We need to talk about the account. Today.”**

PART 3: I stared at Harrison’s message until the screen dimmed in my hand. He had no reason to know about the account unless someone had told him, and Tyler had been careful enough to hide the card inside my coat at the airport. I immediately called the man I had contacted earlier, a lawyer named Daniel Brooks, who had helped me review financial documents during my marriage. When I told him Harrison wanted to discuss the account, Daniel’s voice became serious. “Do not meet him alone, and don’t sign anything he gives you.”

I spent the next hour gathering every document I could access through the account portal. The trust had been established when Tyler was only five, funded through a series of deposits I had never known about. Yet the most recent transaction caught my attention: a transfer request for the entire $3.8 million balance, submitted just days before the custody hearing. The request had been flagged for additional verification because the beneficiary was still a minor. Attached to it was a document claiming that Tyler had voluntarily agreed to relocate permanently with his father.

I read that sentence three times. Tyler had never told me he wanted to leave the country permanently, and I had never signed anything agreeing to such an arrangement. Suddenly, I remembered how quiet he had been during the weeks before court, how he would sometimes stop talking whenever Harrison entered the room. I had mistaken his silence for resentment toward me. Now I wondered whether my son had been carrying a burden no thirteen-year-old should ever have to carry.

Daniel arrived at my apartment that afternoon and examined the documents carefully. He explained that the trust appeared to have been funded by Tyler’s maternal grandfather, who had died before Tyler started school. My father had been a successful businessman, but he had never discussed leaving such a fortune behind. According to the records, he had created the trust specifically to protect Tyler’s future, with strict conditions preventing either parent from withdrawing the principal for personal use. Harrison had apparently been trying to gain control of the money by obtaining authority over Tyler’s financial affairs.

“But why would Tyler choose him in court?” I whispered.

Daniel looked at the transfer request again. “Because your son may have known his father needed that custody ruling to make this transaction easier.” He cautioned that we couldn't yet prove Harrison had manipulated the proceedings, but the timing was suspicious enough to warrant immediate legal action. Then Daniel discovered a note attached to the trust file, written by my father shortly before his death. It instructed the trustee to contact Tyler privately when he turned thirteen and explain that the account existed for his protection.

My hands went numb. Tyler had turned thirteen two months earlier, which meant he might have learned about the money before the custody battle began. If Harrison had discovered the trust too, that could explain why he suddenly became determined to take Tyler overseas. But one question remained: how had Tyler managed to get the black card without his father noticing?

That evening, Daniel helped me contact the trust administrator, who confirmed that the account had been temporarily frozen after suspicious activity was detected. She also agreed to preserve the records and review the authorization documents. Before ending the call, she told us something that changed everything: Tyler had personally contacted her the day before the custody hearing. He had asked what would happen if his father tried to take the money before he was old enough to control it.

Then she forwarded us Tyler’s recorded message.

His small voice filled my kitchen. “If Dad gets custody, he might think he can control everything. But I need him to believe he won, because I have to get the evidence somewhere safe before he finds it.”

I covered my mouth as tears streamed down my face. My son had not abandoned me. He had been trying to protect the inheritance my father left him, and possibly protect me from the man I once trusted with our lives. Then Daniel paused the recording and pointed to the final sentence, which neither of us had noticed.
