Chapter 5

Gabriel turned his gaze toward the tall windows, looking out over the sleeping city of Boston. He had conquered its streets, commanded its fortunes, and ruled its boardrooms, yet had possessed nothing of real value.

Now, holding the small hand of his granddaughter while Clara sat beside him, he finally understood the true measure of wealth. Power was a poor substitute for the simple grace of being genuinely known and loved.

"Tomorrow, everything changes," Gabriel said with quiet resolve, looking at Clara with an open, vulnerable heart. "The lawyers, the trusts, the estate—everything will be restructured to honor Julian's name and Elsie's rightful future."

"She doesn't need vast empires, Gabriel," Clara answered gently, placing her hand over his. "She only needs to know that her grandfather will never let his fists clench in cold, bitter silence again."

Gabriel lifted the small blue paper star from his pocket, laying it gently on the wooden desk beside him. Its uneven folds were imperfect, yet they held together the shattered pieces of his very soul.

"I will hold this star for the rest of my days," Gabriel vowed, smiling at the little girl on his knee. "Whenever the world grows cold or dark, I will remember the words written upon its folds."

Elsie looked up, her bright eyes reflecting the hearth's warm embers, and nodded with utter childhood certainty. "You don't have to be angry anymore, Grandpa. We're right here, and you are not alone."

Gabriel closed his eyes, letting the simple truth wash over him, washing away thirty years of hardened solitude. For the first time in his life, the most feared man in Boston was finally at peace.
