Chapter 12 - WHAT I ACTUALLY CREATED

Meridian began as my idea.

That part was true.

But not as a mind-control program.

Years before the shooting, my father Daniel and Thomas Carter had been trying to understand why certain powerful men escalated from intimidation to irreversible violence.

I funded a private research group.

The original goal was intervention.

Identify patterns.

Interrupt cycles.

Offer psychiatric care, addiction treatment, relocation and protection before someone crossed a line they couldn’t return from.

I had selfish reasons too.

I could see what I was becoming.

More violent.

More suspicious.

More willing to justify anything as necessary.

Thomas believed people could change.

Whitmore believed people could be controlled.

That difference destroyed Meridian.

The recording continued.

“Charles Whitmore took our predictive models and combined them with experimental trauma therapy.”

Sarah had helped design therapeutic memory reconsolidation techniques.

Whitmore weaponized them.

When Thomas discovered the abuses, he tried to expose the project.

The burning-car memory came from that night.

But I hadn’t killed Thomas.

The tape showed the real footage.

A staged crash.

Thomas injured.

Me dragging him away before Meridian agents arrived.

Emma crying beside another vehicle.

The gun in my hand had fired at Whitmore’s men.

Not Thomas.

The guilt had been implanted later.

Emma began sobbing.

“You didn’t kill him.”

“No.”

But my younger self wasn’t finished.

“Don’t use this as an excuse.”

I stared at the screen.

“You did terrible things before Whitmore touched your memories.”

Images appeared.

Men threatened.

Businesses coerced.

Officials bribed.

I looked away.

Emma didn’t let go of my hand.

“You wanted Meridian destroyed because you finally understood that no system can make a bad man good.”

My younger self leaned closer.

“People change only when they choose to.”

The recording ended.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then Emma asked:

“So what was the message saying I was the experiment?”

I looked at the equipment.

“The last Meridian cell.”

Someone was still alive.

Still manipulating us.

Still trying to turn us against each other.

Luke entered the doorway behind us.

He had returned from the hospital without telling me.

“The photograph was deliberate,” he said.

“I know who sent it.”

“Who?”

Luke’s face hardened.

“Dr. Hale.”

The doctor everyone thought had disappeared.

May you like

The man who had altered my memories.

And he was still inside Chicago.
