Chapter 1

“From today on, we no longer need maids. We already have a daughter-in-law in this house for that purpose.”

My mother-in-law said that phrase the morning after my wedding, while three people who had worked there for years held their severance packages and I was still hastily pulling back my hair, not understanding if I had heard correctly.

My name is Savannah, I am thirty-one years old, and I grew up in San Diego. My mother died when I was fourteen, and my father, Don Lucas, raised me alone while building Golden Horizon, a network of rehabilitation centers for older adults with locations in San Diego, Sacramento, and San Jose. He never raised me like a spoiled rich kid. He always repeated a simple piece of advice to me as I was growing up:

“Bending down to help someone does not make you less than they are, but letting them humiliate you certainly does.”

I met Zachary at a health and hospitality conference in San Antonio. He was the regional manager for a company that ran premium senior living residences. He spoke calmly, listened carefully to the doctors, and seemed deeply respectful of his widowed mother. That was honestly what I liked most about him.

When he introduced me to his family in Phoenix, his mother, Patricia, welcomed me to a massive home in Paradise Valley. His younger sister, Courtney, immediately asked me how much my home was worth, if it was solely in my name, and if I was an only child. Zachary later explained that the house did not actually belong to them because it belonged to the company and had been assigned to him because of his executive position.

Before we got married, Zachary promised me we would live alone in my waterfront condo in Coronado. Patricia only asked that we spend a few days with her after the wedding so that the extended family would not gossip about us.

I accepted her request because I wanted to keep the peace.

At the wedding reception, my father handed me the deeds to my condo and a certified deposit check for two million dollars.

“I am not giving you this to make you feel superior to anyone,” he told me in front of everyone present. “I am giving it to you so you always remember that you have an open door right behind you.”

Patricia stared at the leather folder much longer than she ever looked at my face. Courtney even brought her phone closer to record the exact scene.

That night, already staying at the grand house in Paradise Valley, Patricia knocked loudly on our bedroom door.

“Get up bright and early tomorrow morning,” Patricia said firmly through the door. “A newlywed woman should never wake up with the sun already shining high in the sky.”

Zachary just squeezed my arm and asked me not to worry about her comments.

At five thirty in the morning, I heard Patricia gather Maria, the longtime maid, Beatrice, the main cook, and Thomas, the gardener. Right in front of me, she announced to all of them that they were being terminated immediately.

“Now Savannah will run this entire household,” Patricia declared to the staff. “A proper wife must put her own hands to work inside her home.”

I waited patiently for Zachary to step up and say no to his mother.

He only murmured under his breath:

“Mom, maybe Maria could stay on for just a few more days to help out.”

Patricia glared at him sharply, and he immediately remained completely silent.

That very same day, I cleaned glass display cases, changed heavy bedsheets, cooked meals for four people, and scrubbed down a commercial-style kitchen I barely knew. Courtney casually left empty juice glasses all over the living room furniture and demanded that I take her laundry to the dry cleaners.

When Zachary was leaving for his office, he patted my shoulder gently.

“Please just be patient,” Zachary whispered. “It is only for a few days.”

In the late afternoon, while my hands were burning from the harsh washing soap, I overheard Patricia talking on the phone with one of her friends.

“My new daughter-in-law turned out to be completely obedient,” Patricia boasted over the phone. “From the very first day, she understood her proper place in this house.”

I stood frozen in front of the sink as tears welled up in my eyes.

I had arrived at that grand house as a legitimate wife.

They had already decided that I would be their unpaid servant.

And I still could not imagine what sinister plans they had for my money.
