Chapter 7 - A HEARTBEAT AND A PROMISE

The hospital room was painfully bright.

Mara lay on the examination bed while a physician moved an ultrasound probe across her abdomen.

Marcus held her hand.

Too hard.

“You’re crushing my fingers,” she whispered.

He immediately released pressure.

“Sorry.”

Silence.

A second.

Two.

Three.

Marcus stared at the monitor as if his life were inside it.

Then the room filled with a heartbeat.

Fast.

Steady.

Beautiful.

Mara began crying.

Marcus closed his eyes.

The doctor smiled.

“Your daughter looks good. Strong heartbeat. We’re keeping you overnight because of the fall, but right now everything is reassuring.”

Marcus sat down abruptly.

Mara stared at him.

His eyes were wet.

The man people crossed streets to avoid was crying because his unborn daughter’s heart was beating.

When they were finally alone, Marcus bent forward.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For the danger.”

“That wasn’t all yours.”

“For the way I treated fear like permission.”

Mara stayed quiet.

“For assuming that because I could arrange something, I had the right to arrange it. For making decisions around you instead of with you.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I spent my entire life believing protection meant controlling every possible outcome.”

“You can’t.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

A tired smile touched his mouth.

“Tonight was persuasive.”

Mara watched him.

“You came when I called.”

“I always will.”

“That isn’t the same as knowing how to stay.”

Marcus nodded.

“No.”

A long silence passed.

Then he reached into his coat.

Mara immediately narrowed her eyes.

“If that’s a ring, I swear—”

“It isn’t.”

He opened a small velvet box.

Inside lay a delicate necklace.

A tiny white flower was carved into pearl.

“My mother’s.”

Mara touched it.

“What kind of flower?”

“Gardenia.”

“Why are you giving it to me?”

Marcus closed the box.

“Because I considered bringing a ring.”

Her eyebrows rose.

“And then I realized proposing while you’re recovering from being kidnapped would be exactly the kind of dramatic decision you keep telling me not to make.”

Mara laughed despite the ache in her side.

“Progress.”

“I thought so.”

He placed the box in her palm.

“This is not a proposal.”

“What is it?”

“A promise.”

She looked at him.

“That our daughter will never wonder whether her father loves her.”

His voice grew quieter.

“That I will never ask you to stay because you’re afraid to leave.”

Mara’s eyes burned.

“And if one day you decide you love me, I want it to be because choosing me feels like freedom, not because I made every other choice impossible.”

She stared at the man sitting beside her.

He still frightened people.

There were things in his past she did not fully know and might never forgive.

Love did not erase that.

A baby did not erase it.

A good moment did not erase a lifetime of bad decisions.

But Marcus was doing something Tristan never had.

He was changing when change cost him something.

Mara reached for his hand.

“I already love you.”

Marcus went completely still.

“Don’t make that face.”

“What face?”

“The one where someone just informed you gravity stopped working.”

“I wasn’t prepared.”

“You own twelve pregnancy books.”

“None covered this.”

She laughed.

Marcus leaned forward until his forehead rested against hers.

“I love you too.”

This kiss was different from the wedding.

No audience.

No ex-boyfriend.

No statement.

May you like

No rescue.

Just a choice.
