Chapter 1 - THE BINDER OPENED ON THE LAB FLOOR

My hand stayed on the open blue K-9 binder while Logan Mercer stared past me through the lab windows.

Outside on the athletic field, one police dog lay flat on the grass.

Then another.

Then six more.

The classroom went so quiet I could hear Mrs. Harlow’s latex glove squeak around the edge of the doorframe.

Logan tried to laugh, but it came out thin.

“What is this?” he said. “Some kind of dog trick?”

Mrs. Harlow still had one hand near my braid. She had let go fast when the intercom mentioned State Police, but everyone had already seen it. The red pressure marks on my scalp were not dramatic. They were not bloody. They were just visible enough.

And that made the room worse.

A girl in the back whispered, “She pulled her hair.”

Another boy said, “I recorded it.”

Mrs. Harlow spun toward him.

“Put that phone away.”

The boy froze, but he did not delete anything.

Logan stepped closer to the lab table. He looked at my binder like it had personally insulted him.

The laminated card had slid halfway out of its sleeve. It showed a state seal, a K-9 certification number, and my father’s name printed under “Master Trainer.”

Not enough to explain everything.

Enough to make Mrs. Harlow stop breathing normally.

She reached for it.

I moved my hand over the sleeve.

“Don’t touch my father’s records,” I said.

Those were the first words I had spoken since she dragged me out of my chair.

Mrs. Harlow blinked, like my voice offended her more than my dog hair ever had.

“You do not give orders in my lab, Lily Harper.”

Logan smiled again because he thought he heard permission.

“There she is,” he said. “The kennel princess finally talks.”

A few students looked down. Nobody laughed this time.

From the hallway came the sound of heavy boots, radios, and clipped commands.

Not chaos.

Not panic.

Procedure.

Mrs. Harlow straightened her white coat like it could protect her.

“Class,” she said, too loudly, “we are going to the athletic field. Lily, you will remain here until the nurse checks you for contamination.”

I picked up the binder.

Logan blocked the aisle with his shoulder.

“Leave the mutt book,” he said.

Then a deep voice from the doorway said, “That book is state property when it contains active training records.”

Everyone turned.

A uniformed K-9 commander stood in the lab entrance, and his eyes were fixed on Logan’s hand still hovering over my binder.
