Chapter 5 - THE RULES FINALLY ARRIVED

That was when the real hammer came down.

Not shouting.

Not revenge.

Rules.

Commander Reese laid the printed email on the lab table where everyone could see the header but not every detail.

It was from the county animal shelter director to the school office.

Subject line visible enough.

STUDENT SAFETY CONCERN / K-9 DEMONSTRATION / MERCER INCIDENT.

Mr. Danvers turned pale.

“I never received that.”

Mrs. Harlow said nothing.

Logan looked at her.

She looked away.

Commander Reese spoke evenly.

“The shelter reported an animal cruelty concern involving a student vehicle connected to Logan Mercer. Because that same student would be present during a K-9 demonstration, the shelter requested staff supervision. The email was marked received by Mrs. Harlow.”

Mrs. Harlow’s voice sharpened.

“I receive dozens of messages.”

“Then why did you reply?” Commander Reese asked.

He turned the page.

Her own words were printed beneath the shelter director’s warning.

This is unnecessary drama from that dog-hair girl’s family. I will handle her.

No one moved.

Even Logan stopped pretending.

Mr. Danvers put one hand on the lab table.

“Melissa…”

Mrs. Harlow snapped, “I meant I would manage a disruptive student.”

Commander Reese pointed to my backpack.

“You managed her by searching her property without administrative presence, using degrading language, and physically removing her by the hair in front of witnesses.”

“She was unsanitary.”

The commander’s voice stayed low.

“She is a child.”

That sentence hit harder than any yell could have.

The principal turned to the class.

“Everyone, phones down, but do not delete anything. You will be asked for statements.”

Then he faced Mrs. Harlow.

“You are relieved from classroom duties pending investigation.”

Her mouth dropped.

“Over dog hair?”

“Over conduct,” he said. “Over failure to report. Over physical contact. Over retaliation against a student connected to a complaint.”

Logan backed toward the sink.

“My dad’s going to call the board.”

Mr. Danvers turned on him next.

“Your father can call whoever he wants. You are suspended from today’s demonstration and referred for disciplinary review.”

Commander Reese added, “And the animal cruelty complaint is not a school rumor anymore. It is being reviewed with witness statements and shelter records.”

Logan’s face twisted.

“I didn’t hurt that dog.”

I finally spoke.

“No. You missed.”

Everyone looked at me.

“The rock hit the fence,” I said. “The dog hurt himself trying to get away.”

Logan whispered, “You saw?”

I shook my head.

May you like

“My dad did.”

Outside, my father started walking toward the building with the lead dog at his side.
