Chapter 11 - The Exchange and the Empty Vault

Adrian rose unsteadily.

“Where’s Lily?”

My silence answered him.

His face changed.

“Vincent has her?”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“Then he finally did it.”

“Did what?”

“Forced us all into the same place.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Why?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Because the trust isn’t Vincent’s real target.”

“What is?”

“Salvatore’s archive.”

Dominic frowned.

“What archive?”

“Your father kept records on everyone. Judges. businessmen. politicians. criminals. People who owed favors. People who owed money. People who betrayed him.”

Helena looked shocked.

“I thought it was destroyed.”

“No.”

Adrian rubbed his wrists.

“Salvatore hid it inside the trust.”

Dominic’s face hardened.

“Where?”

“Only Maria can access it.”

“Why?”

“Biometric authorization.”

I stared.

“I’ve never authorized anything.”

“You don’t need to.”

Adrian looked toward my necklace.

“The locket.”

I touched it.

“The archive key is inside.”

Helena removed her own necklace.

They looked identical.

Adrian shook his head.

“Both.”

Two halves.

Two keys.

Vincent needed me.

And Helena.

Suddenly his entire plan made horrifying sense.

He had not tried to eliminate us because he needed access first.

Lily was leverage.

Dominic checked his watch.

“Sunrise is thirty-seven minutes away.”

A burner phone began ringing on the floor beside Adrian’s chair.

Dominic answered.

Vincent.

“Bring Maria, Helena, both lockets and Adrian.”

“Where?”

“You’ll receive coordinates.”

“If Lily is hurt—”

“She is eating cereal.”

My knees weakened with relief.

Then Lily’s voice came through faintly.

“Mommy?”

“Lily!”

“I’m okay. Daddy’s friend gave me strawberries.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

She had no idea her father stood ten feet from me.

Vincent returned.

“Twenty-eight minutes.”

The call ended.

Coordinates arrived.

An old Moretti bank building in Manhattan.

Helena examined the address.

“That was Salvatore’s private vault.”

Dominic smiled without humor.

“Of course.”

We drove into New York as dawn painted the skyline gray.

The bank had been closed for a decade.

Inside, Vincent waited with Lily beside him.

She ran toward me.

“Mommy!”

Vincent allowed her.

I held her so tightly she complained.

Then she saw Adrian.

She stared.

Adrian dropped to his knees.

He was crying before she even asked.

“Who are you?”

He looked at me.

I could have punished him by keeping the truth.

Instead I whispered:

“Sweetheart, this is your daddy.”

Lily stared.

Then touched his beard.

“You’re late.”

Adrian laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

“How late?”

“Very late.”

“Mommy was mad.”

“I know.”

Vincent clapped slowly.

“Beautiful.”

Dominic glared.

“Finish this.”

Vincent pointed toward a vault.

“Lockets.”

Helena and I inserted them into twin slots.

A hidden biometric reader scanned our fingerprints.

The vault opened.

Inside was no money.

No documents.

Only a small black case.

Vincent grabbed it.

Then frowned.

Empty.

His face twisted.

“No.”

A note sat inside.

Dominic picked it up.

He read aloud.

IF VINCENT FOUND THIS, HE WAS NEVER WORTHY OF IT.

Adrian laughed.

Vincent turned on him.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Then who moved the archive?”

A voice came from behind us.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stepped from a hidden doorway.

Dominic’s face became white.

May you like

Because the man standing there had been buried seven years earlier.

“Father?”
