Chapter 12 - Salvatore's Appearance and the Confrontation

Salvatore Moretti looked nothing like the photographs in Dominic’s study.
He had lost weight.
His hair was completely white.
A cane supported his left side.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Dominic’s eyes.
Maria’s eyes.
My eyes.
“Impossible,” Dominic whispered.
Salvatore studied his son.
“I’ve heard that often.”
Dominic crossed the room and seized him by the coat.
“You let us bury you.”
“Yes.”
“You let Ethan believe his grandfather was dead.”
“Yes.”
“You let me bury Isabella thinking you were already gone.”
At her name, Salvatore’s composure cracked.
“I know.”
Dominic shoved him away.
“No, you don’t.”
Vincent raised his gun.
Salvatore barely looked at him.
“Still impatient.”
“Where is the archive?”
“Gone.”
Vincent’s face tightened.
“You built me.”
“I trained you.”
“You promised me everything.”
“I promised you responsibility.”
“You gave it to her.”
He pointed at me.
Salvatore finally looked directly at his hidden daughter.
“Maria.”
I felt nothing resembling affection.
“You don’t get to say my name like you earned it.”
Pain crossed his face.
Fair.
“You abandoned my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You abandoned me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Cowardice.”
I had expected excuses.
The simple answer disarmed me.
Salvatore continued.
“I loved Helena. But I was married into a family alliance. When Maria was born, acknowledging her would have created danger.”
“So you hid us.”
“Yes.”
“Then disappeared.”
“I arranged money.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Money is not a father.”
“No.”
He accepted every accusation without resistance.
Vincent stepped forward.
“Enough family therapy.”
He pointed the gun toward Salvatore.
“Archive.”
Salvatore smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Understand what?”
“There is no archive.”
Adrian frowned.
“You told me—”
“I allowed rumors of an archive to exist.”
“Why?”
“To identify the people willing to betray my family to obtain it.”
Dominic stared.
“A trap.”
“Yes.”
Vincent’s face became almost serene.
“You fabricated decades of leverage?”
“I fabricated one irresistible secret.”
The trust existed.
The properties existed.
The hidden daughter existed.
But the legendary archive was fiction.
Vincent had destroyed relationships, betrayed friends and risked everything for something that had never existed.
He laughed.
Then laughed harder.
“You think that makes you clever?”
“No.”
Salvatore’s smile faded.
“It makes me responsible for creating you.”
Vincent’s finger tightened around the trigger.
Lily suddenly spoke.
“Uncle Vincent?”
Everyone froze.
He looked at her.
Lily had learned from Adrian that Vincent was technically her uncle.
“Why are you angry?”
For one heartbeat, Vincent seemed confused.
Then Lily held out something.
A tiny silver box.
The same kind she had seen near Ethan’s cake.
“I found this in your coat.”
Vincent’s eyes widened.
She had apparently slipped it from his pocket while hugging me.
Dominic’s guards moved.
Vincent swung the gun toward them.
Adrian tackled him.
The shot struck the ceiling.
Chaos erupted.
Dominic pulled Lily and me behind the vault wall.
Helena knocked the silver box from Vincent’s hand.
Adrian and Vincent crashed into a desk.
The brothers stared at each other.
“You chose them,” Vincent hissed.
“I chose my daughter.”
“You didn’t even know her.”
“I knew enough.”
Vincent struck him.
Adrian fell.
Dominic stepped forward.
Vincent raised the gun again.
Then Salvatore’s cane snapped across his wrist.
The weapon clattered away.
Dominic’s guards restrained Vincent.
It ended not with some grand explosion or spectacular violence.
It ended with Vincent Russo on the floor, breathing hard, staring at the family he had spent years trying to manipulate.
His expression was almost wounded.
“You would choose her over me?”
Salvatore looked at him.
“She is my daughter.”
Vincent laughed bitterly.
“And what was I?”
Salvatore said nothing.
That silence answered more cruelly than words.
Police sirens approached outside.
May you like
Dominic had contacted federal authorities before entering.
Vincent would face charges not merely for the cake incident, but for years of financial crimes, kidnapping and conspiracy.
