Chapter 1 - The House on Briarwood Lane

For nearly nine years, Maribel Sloan had entered the same side door of a large home on Briarwood Lane in Lexington, Kentucky, before most of the neighborhood had even turned on its lights.

The house belonged to the wealthy Calloway family, whose name appeared on office buildings, charitable foundations, and business magazines across the state. To strangers, the Calloways seemed untouchable. They had money, influence, and the kind of reputation that made people listen when they spoke.

Maribel had none of those things.

She rented a small duplex twenty minutes away, drove an old sedan, and lived carefully from paycheck to paycheck. Yet she had something she valued more than money: a reputation for being dependable.

Every morning, she polished the long wooden staircase, prepared breakfast, arranged fresh flowers, handled laundry, and made sure the home felt peaceful before anyone came downstairs.

But the most important part of her day was a seven-year-old boy named Owen.

Owen was the youngest child of Everett Calloway, a successful real-estate investor who had been raising his son alone since losing his wife several years earlier.

Owen had been only two when Maribel started working in the house.

He barely remembered a life without her.

Whenever he scraped his knee, lost a toy, became nervous before school, or woke from a bad dream, he searched for Maribel.

One morning, while she packed his lunch, Owen leaned against the kitchen counter and asked, “Will you still be here when I’m old?”

Maribel laughed softly.

“When you’re old, I’ll be very old.”

“That’s okay,” he said seriously. “You can still come for dinner.”

She smiled and tapped the end of his nose.

“Then you’d better learn to cook.”

From across the kitchen, Everett watched them with an expression Maribel could not quite read.

For a moment, he almost smiled.

Then his mother entered the room.

And the warmth disappeared.
