Chapter 11 - Everett Finally Chose a Side
Outside the courtroom, Everett confronted his mother.
“You knew.”
Lenora kept her voice low.
“I was protecting this family.”
“From what?”
“From forgetting boundaries.”
Everett stared at her.
“You let an innocent woman lose her work and her reputation because my son loved her?”
Lenora did not answer.
That silence told him everything.
For years, Everett had allowed his mother’s certainty to replace his own judgment.
Now he finally understood the cost.
He found Maribel near the courthouse entrance.
She was preparing to leave.
“Maribel.”
She stopped but did not turn immediately.
“I owe you an apology that is far too late.”
Maribel faced him.
“Yes, you do.”
Everett nodded.
“I should have believed you.”
“You didn’t need to believe me blindly. You only needed to give me the same fairness you would have given someone with your last name.”
He had no answer.
Then Owen came running from behind him.
Maribel knelt and opened her arms.
He hugged her tightly.
“I told you,” he whispered. “I knew you didn’t take it.”
This time, Maribel cried.
