Chapter 9 - The Ledger and the Final Confrontation

The mansion was quiet when they returned shortly after midnight.

Adrien had ordered minimal staff.

Nobody knew Elena was with him.

They entered through the service garage.

The west salon had remained locked since Christmas.

Adrien opened it.

Dustless.

Perfect.

The piano stood near the windows.

Elena approached first.

“My father used to say my mother hid letters beneath the left pedal assembly.”

Adrien knelt.

Removed the panel.

Nothing.

Marco searched the underside.

Elena ran her fingers along the interior brace.

A small click.

A wooden compartment opened.

Inside sat a black drive.

Adrien reached for it.

A voice behind them said, “I wondered how long it would take.”

Daniel Moretti stood in the doorway.

He looked older than Adrien remembered.

But not weak.

Two armed men stood beside him.

Adrien rose slowly.

“Uncle.”

Daniel smiled.

“You always were stubborn.”

His eyes shifted toward Elena.

“And you were always inconvenient.”

Adrien moved slightly in front of her.

Daniel noticed.

“Too late for chivalry, nephew.”

Elena stepped sideways so Adrien no longer blocked her.

“You tried to kill me.”

Daniel sighed.

“No. I tried to make you ill enough to stop investigating.”

“Victoria nearly killed me for you.”

“She was remarkably easy to manipulate.”

Adrien’s jaw hardened.

Daniel looked amused.

“There he is.”

“Where is Isabella?” Adrien asked.

Daniel’s face changed.

“My daughter died years ago.”

“No.”

A tiny silence.

Then Daniel shrugged.

“She chose strangers over blood.”

“You sold human beings.”

“I built a business.”

“You built a grave.”

Daniel’s smile vanished.

“Your father would have understood necessity.”

“My father hid evidence against you.”

That struck.

For the first time, Daniel looked toward the drive.

Adrien saw fear.

Small.

But real.

Daniel raised his hand.

One gunman stepped forward.

“Give me the drive.”

Adrien did not move.

Daniel sighed.

“Do not make this theatrical.”

Elena laughed softly.

Every man looked at her.

“Interesting choice of words.”

Daniel frowned.

Elena reached into her coat pocket.

Removed her phone.

The screen showed a live connection.

Miriam Vale.

Federal prosecutors.

Europol.

A dozen agencies already receiving everything transmitted from the room.

Daniel’s face emptied.

“You think the drive matters?” Elena asked.

“The moment Adrien opened the piano compartment, the system photographed it and uploaded the serial number.”

Daniel looked toward Adrien.

“You let her turn on the family?”

Adrien’s answer was calm.

“No.”

He looked at Elena.

“I finally let her finish what she started.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Daniel’s gunmen glanced toward the windows.

Marco smiled.

“That would be the part where your evening gets worse.”

Daniel reached for a weapon.

Adrien moved.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Marco tackled the first guard.

Elena dropped behind the piano.

Adrien slammed Daniel into the wall and drove the weapon from his hand.

For one savage second, Adrien had his uncle by the throat.

Daniel’s face darkened.

Adrien could kill him.

Everyone in the room knew it.

Daniel smiled weakly.

“There’s the Moretti blood.”

Adrien looked at Elena.

She was watching him.

Not pleading.

Not afraid.

Waiting.

Adrien released his uncle.

Daniel fell coughing to the floor.

Adrien stepped back.

“No.”

The word surprised even him.

“You don’t get to turn me into your final excuse.”

Federal agents entered seconds later.

Daniel Moretti was taken from the mansion in handcuffs.

By dawn, raids were underway in three countries.

Warehouses were opened.

Accounts seized.

Victims located.

Hail Capital collapsed within forty-eight hours under the weight of records showing Daniel had used its hidden structures for years.

Victoria confessed immediately.

She admitted altering Elena’s tonic.

Admitted following her.

Admitted knowing she was helping push Adrien toward divorce.

The prosecutor ultimately charged her with poisoning-related offenses, obstruction and conspiracy, though the evidence supported Elena’s claim that Victoria had not known the substance was toxic.

Adrien never visited her.

Months later, Daniel accepted a plea arrangement only after Isabella Moretti appeared before a grand jury.

His daughter.

Alive.

The woman he had spent eleven years pretending was dead became the witness who ended him.

The Moretti empire changed.

Not overnight.

But completely.

Adrien sold the companies most vulnerable to criminal influence.

Closed the routes Elena identified.

Removed men who believed violence was tradition rather than failure.

The legitimate businesses survived.

Some even flourished.

May you like

For the first time in generations, the Moretti name became smaller.

Adrien discovered he did not mind.
