Chapter 8 - The Reunion by the Winter Sea

Adrien left before sunrise.
No army.
No convoy.
Elena had made her condition clear.
Adrien could bring Marco.
Nobody else.
Snow lined the road when they reached the house.
Small.
Gray.
Overlooking a violent winter sea.
Adrien sat in the car for almost a minute before opening the door.
He had imagined finding Elena a thousand times.
Angry.
Ill.
Tearful.
Happy without him.
He had imagined apologies.
Arguments.
Begging.
Nothing prepared him for the woman who opened the door.
Elena had cut her hair to her shoulders.
She wore a cream sweater and jeans.
Thinner.
Paler.
Alive.
Adrien forgot every sentence he had rehearsed.
“Elena.”
Her eyes met his.
For one second, everything between them existed there.
Six years.
Love.
Betrayal.
Loneliness.
The ballroom.
Then she looked toward Marco.
“You found Vale.”
Adrien almost laughed from the shock of hearing her voice.
“You expected me to.”
“I hoped you would.”
He stepped forward.
Elena moved back.
Not frightened.
A boundary.
Adrien stopped instantly.
The movement cost him more than she could know.
“Are you well?”
“Mostly.”
“The poison?”
“Treatment worked. The lesion is shrinking.”
His eyes closed briefly.
Relief.
Pain.
Rage.
All at once.
“You should have told me.”
Elena’s expression barely changed.
“You should have given me reasons to believe telling you mattered.”
He accepted the blow.
Because there was no defense.
Marco entered behind him.
“Where is Isabella?”
Elena looked toward the stairs.
“Not here.”
Adrien’s eyes sharpened.
“You know she’s alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why did she meet you?”
“Because she was trying to expose her father.”
Elena led them into the sitting room.
A fire burned in the stone fireplace.
No luxury.
No servants.
Nothing Moretti.
Adrien noticed the silver bracelet on her wrist.
The one from the bookstore.
He almost lost the ability to speak again.
Elena sat opposite them.
“Isabella discovered what Daniel was doing twelve years ago.”
“Trafficking.”
“Yes.”
“She helped him?”
“At first.”
Adrien stared.
Elena continued.
“She was twenty-four. She believed the women being transported through Daniel’s agencies were legitimate workers. When she discovered the truth, she threatened to expose him.”
“So he killed her.”
“He tried.”
Elena folded her hands.
“She escaped. The dead woman in the car was one of Daniel’s victims. Isabella used the chaos to disappear.”
“Why stay hidden eleven years?”
“Because Daniel threatened her mother.”
Adrien frowned.
“Her mother died before the accident.”
Elena shook her head.
“That is what Daniel told everyone.”
Adrien felt another piece of his family history fracture.
“Where is she?”
“A protected facility in Switzerland.”
Marco cursed quietly.
Elena looked at Adrien.
“Daniel built the trafficking network over almost twenty years.”
“Under my father?”
“Yes.”
“My father knew?”
“No.”
The answer came fast.
“He hid it from everyone. When your father died and you took control, Daniel realized you would eventually modernize enough systems to expose him.”
“So he framed me.”
“He was preparing to.”
“And you found it.”
“Yes.”
Adrien’s eyes lowered.
“And he poisoned you.”
Elena did not answer immediately.
Then:
“No.”
Adrien looked up.
Marco leaned forward.
“What?”
“Daniel didn’t poison me.”
The room went silent.
Adrien’s voice became low.
“Then who did?”
Elena looked toward him.
“I didn’t know until after I left.”
Adrien felt dread settle into his bones.
“Elena.”
“The compound entered my system through a herbal sleep tonic I kept in the bedroom.”
He remembered the bottle.
Elena drank it almost every night.
“Who had access?”
“Staff. Security. You.”
His face tightened.
“And?”
“Victoria.”
Adrien stood.
Elena lifted a hand.
“Sit down.”
The old authority in her voice struck him almost painfully.
He sat.
“She did not know what was in it.”
Adrien frowned.
“What?”
“Daniel gave Victoria a vial and told her it was a harmless sedative.”
Marco stared.
“Why would she put sedative in Elena’s drink?”
Elena looked toward the fire.
“Because Daniel convinced her that if I appeared unstable, exhausted and irrational, Adrien would leave me sooner.”
Adrien’s stomach twisted.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She poisoned you.”
“She believed she was making me sleep.”
“That changes nothing.”
“It changes intent.”
“It does not change what she did.”
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“But this is exactly why I couldn’t tell you before I knew everything.”
Adrien understood.
He hated that he understood.
Had she accused Victoria months earlier, Adrien might have killed her.
And Daniel would have continued untouched.
“Does Victoria know?”
“Not yet.”
Adrien’s face became stone.
“She will.”
Elena watched him carefully.
“Adrien.”
“I won’t kill her.”
Marco looked genuinely surprised.
Adrien glanced at him.
“I can learn.”
For the first time, the corner of Elena’s mouth almost moved.
Almost.
Then she opened a folder on the table.
“Daniel is in Chicago.”
Adrien froze.
“How do you know?”
“He contacted Isabella yesterday.”
“Why?”
“He thinks she has the original ledger.”
“What ledger?”
“The record of every person moved through his network. Names, buyers, payments, officials he bribed.”
“That can destroy him.”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
Elena looked at Adrien.
“In your house.”
The mansion.
Adrien stared.
“Where?”
“Your father hid it.”
“My father knew?”
“Not what it was.”
Elena explained.
Years earlier, Adrien’s father had discovered an encrypted financial archive belonging to Daniel. Suspicious of his brother, he copied the data onto a physical drive and hid it before he could investigate.
Then he died unexpectedly.
Adrien inherited the empire.
Daniel never found the copy.
“How do you know this?”
“Isabella.”
“Where did my father hide it?”
Elena’s eyes held his.
“Inside your mother’s piano.”
Adrien saw the room instantly.
The old Steinway in the west salon.
Untouched since his mother died.
He stood.
“We go now.”
Elena did too.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“You’re staying here.”
Her expression changed.
There it was.
The old conflict.
“You found me after losing me, and your first instinct is already to issue orders.”
Adrien closed his mouth.
Marco looked away, perhaps to hide amusement.
Adrien tried again.
“Daniel tried to have you killed.”
“Yes.”
“I do not want you anywhere near him.”
“That sounds different.”
“It is.”
Elena considered him.
May you like
Then picked up her coat.
“I’m coming.”
