Chapter 15

Adrien’s money had saved Noah’s heart.
His connections had brought doctors and opened doors that had been closed to Clare for years.
But none of those things had created her courage.
They had not created her dignity.
They had not created the instinct that made her move toward frightened people when everyone else stepped away.
Those things had existed before Adrien ever saw her.
The difference was that now someone had finally seen them.
Adrien continued paying his debts.
He understood that the work might take the rest of his life.
Maya had warned him of exactly that.
The empire he had built would not survive if he truly attempted to repair what it had done.
Adrien accepted the cost.
He had spent 20 years believing power meant never owing anyone anything.
Clare had shown him that the opposite could be true.
Sometimes owing someone changed what a person chose to become.
Sometimes a debt could not be repaid.
It could only be carried differently.
The photograph of Noah remained important to him.
The bent corners.
The gap-toothed smile.
The words on the back.
Noah, my whole heart.
It had fallen from Clare’s apron on the night she almost died for Lily, and it had shown Adrien the reason behind a woman he did not yet understand.
By the time he understood her, he also understood that Noah had never been the only person Clare carried that way.
She carried frightened strangers.
She carried Lily.
She carried Mrs. Alvarez.
She carried families arriving at the foundation with nowhere else to go.
She even carried men like Adrien, though he had never asked her to and had done nothing to deserve it.
What changed was that Clare no longer had to carry all of them alone.
Noah had Lily.
Lily had Clare.
May you like
Clare had people who would finally hold her when she was the frightened one.
And Adrien, who had once spent his life ensuring nobody could get close enough to hurt him, had people he could no longer imagine losing.
