Chapter 7

Clare stared at him.
Then she said no.
Adrien had expected gratitude.
Instead, the woman who had nearly died saving his sister refused him.
She did not know him.
She could not accept a surgery costing more than she would earn in her lifetime from a stranger without knowing what he wanted in return.
Her entire life had taught her that when something looked too good, someone wanted something back.
“What is it you want from me? Just tell me. Tell me what the price is.”
There it was again.
The price.
Clare and Adrien had grown up at opposite ends of the world and learned the same lesson.
Nothing was free.
The hand that fed you was the hand that owned you.
Adrien told her there was no price.
Clare did not believe him.
She had spent 2 years begging for help. Every form, every office, every list had ended with the same answer.
No.
Now a man she had never met was offering a miracle.
Things did not happen like that to people like her.
Adrien finally told her why.
A man had walked into the restaurant to kill Lily. A hundred people had moved away.
His own security had been outside.
Adrien himself had frozen.
Only Clare had moved toward the danger.
She had not known Lily was rich.
She had not known who Adrien was.
She had not expected anything in return.
She had simply seen someone who needed help.
Adrien had spent his entire life looking for 1 person capable of doing something like that without wanting anything back.
Until that night, he had never found one.
He told Clare that paying for Noah’s surgery was not generosity.
It was an attempt to answer a debt he could never repay.
Clare still resisted.
She would not accept money as payment for saving Lily.
If she did, then afterward it could look as though that was why she had done it.
She refused to sell the one moment in years when she had been exactly the person she wanted to be.
She wanted to keep it clean.
Adrien understood.
Then he asked her to accept the surgery as a gift.
Not payment.
Not a transaction.
A gift from someone who had too much and had never before found a good reason to spend it on something that mattered.
“Let Noah be the thing it matters on.”
Clare finally closed her eyes.
“Only for Noah.”
His surgery.
His treatment.
Nothing for her.
Adrien agreed.
Then, almost reluctantly, he admitted that he would like to meet Noah someday.
Clare looked at him.
“He’ll like you.”
The words seemed to surprise both of them.
“He likes everybody. He hasn’t learned yet not to.”
Clare’s eyes eventually closed.
Adrien remained beside her until she fell asleep.
Outside, Lily was waiting.
She told her brother that paying for Noah’s surgery was not enough.
Clare had spent her entire life taking care of people while nobody took care of her.
They could not simply pay a bill and walk away.
Adrien knew Lily was right.
He told her they would make sure Clare never had to be afraid again.
But another question remained.
Marcus Reed.
The man in the fake uniform.
Adrien had ordered Maya to keep him alive because he wanted to know why.
Standing in the hospital hallway at 4:00 in the morning, Adrien finally admitted what he already suspected.
Attacks like that did not appear from nowhere.
Marcus had come for Lily because of something connected to Adrien.
May you like
The empire Adrien had built to protect his sister might have been the very thing that nearly killed her.
He sent Lily home and went to meet the man who had tried to take her from him.
