Chapter 12

The transition from the pristine, white marble foyer to the vibrant, pastel colors of the east wing was jarring but deeply comforting. As Dominic pushed open the doors to the newly prepared suite adjacent to the nursery, a small, pink blur launched itself across the room.
"Elena!" Lily shrieked, crashing into Elena’s legs and wrapping her tiny arms around the woman's thighs.
"Careful, little bird," Dominic cautioned swiftly, reaching down to ensure the child didn't jar Elena’s injured hand.
"I'm okay, Dominic," Elena smiled genuinely, kneeling awkwardly to hug the little girl with her good arm. "I missed you too, sweetie."
The suite was breathtaking. It was flooded with bright, natural light from massive bay windows. The decor was elegant and sophisticated, featuring rich fabrics and warm woods—a staggering upgrade from the sparse, subterranean servant's quarters.
"I picked out the pillows!" Lily announced proudly, pointing to the bed covered in an absurd, colorful assortment of throw pillows.
"They are beautiful, Lily. Thank you," Elena laughed softly.
Dominic stood near the doorway, watching them. The cold, sociopathic mask he wore for the criminal underworld was entirely gone. His sharp, intimidating eyes were warm and relaxed. He was an apex predator observing his most precious treasures.
"Maria will bring up your dinner," Dominic instructed, stepping further into the room. "You are to rest tonight, Elena. Tomorrow, the physical therapy begins, and we will discuss your security protocols."
"Security protocols?" Elena asked, her beautiful face tightening slightly.

"You are the guardian of the Vale heir," Dominic stated, his volume dropping into a serious, lethal register. "Arthur Sinclair knows who you are. He knows why the engagement was broken. You are a vulnerability, and I do not leave vulnerabilities unprotected."
He turned and walked back into the hallway, leaving Elena with a chilling realization: her safety was now a matter of syndicate warfare.
