Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating weight. Dominic Vale slowly pulled his hand back, allowing Elena to return her injured, swollen fingers to the protective sanctuary of her white apron.

With a slow, deliberate grace that belied his massive frame, Dominic pushed his chair back. The scrape of the wooden legs against the floor was deafening. He rose to his full height, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored suit, his imposing, deeply masculine presence dominating the bright, airy room.

He didn't yell. He didn't curse. He simply took one step sideways, positioning his broad, formidable body directly between Elena and Audrey. He created a physical wall of tailored wool and lethal intent, completely shielding the weeping housemaid from his fiancée's venomous glare.

Audrey stared up at him, her fair, rosy skin paling slightly under the intense, golden glow of the chandeliers. She realized the magnitude of her miscalculation. She looked up into Dominic’s cold, perceptive eyes, desperately trying to maintain her high-society composure.

Her practiced, public smile tightened violently, pulling into a strained, impatient curve that looked more like a grimace.

"She wouldn't let go," Audrey blurted out.

The words escaped her lips entirely too quickly, a frantic, defensive reflex born of sheer panic. It was a catastrophic error. By offering an excuse, she had just confessed to the crime in front of fifty of the most dangerous men in America.

Dominic became completely, terrifyingly still. The slight, almost imperceptible movement of his chest as he breathed was the only sign he was alive. The guests remained absolutely silent, paralyzed in their chairs, watching a king process the betrayal of his chosen queen.

Behind Dominic’s broad back, Elena squeezed her eyes shut, fighting against the agonizing throb in her crushed hand. She had to finish the truth. She had to explain why she hadn't pulled her hand away from the heavy oak door.

Elena opened her tear-filled eyes, peering around Dominic’s arm to hold his gaze. Her chin was trembling uncontrollably, her beautiful heart-shaped face pale with exhaustion and pain.

"Your daughter was inside," Elena sobbed, her voice breaking on the final word.

The silence that followed was absolute. It was the silence of a bomb dropping, suspended in the air a microsecond before detonation.

Dominic Vale had a four-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, a child he protected with a ruthless, bordering-on-psychopathic devotion. The realization of what Elena had just said crashed over the room. Audrey hadn't just crushed a maid's hand. She had crushed the hand of a woman who was physically holding a door open to protect the boss’s child.

Dominic slowly, methodically turned his head, shifting his dark, lethal eyes toward Audrey.

The strained, practiced smile completely disappeared from Audrey’s face. Her breath caught violently in her throat, producing a sharp, panicked choking sound. Her fingers, adorned with the massive diamond engagement ring, froze rigidly around the stem of her crystal wine glass. She stared up at the man she was supposed to marry, seeing nothing but an open grave in his eyes.

Dominic did not speak. He simply locked his gaze with hers, letting the sheer, unadulterated terror of his silence drown her completely before she could even attempt to answer.
