Chapter 4 - The Kiss That Changed Everything

Two weeks later came the anniversary gala of the Ashford Hotel.
Nathan invited Claire.
She said no.
Then yes.
Then nearly canceled.
In the end, she arrived on his arm wearing wine-red silk.
Adrian saw them the moment they entered.
His body reacted before his mind did.
His glass froze halfway to his mouth.
Nathan’s hand rested lightly at Claire’s lower back.
Claire was laughing.
Not smiling politely.
Laughing.
Adrian had forgotten how different those two things looked on her.
His date, a beautiful attorney named Brooke, was telling him something.
He heard none of it.
“What the hell?” he whispered.
Across the room, Claire saw him.
Nathan felt her body tighten.
“Want to leave?”
The question surprised her.
“This is your event.”
“I’ll survive.”
“You’d leave because I’m uncomfortable?”
“I’d leave because you asked.”
Claire looked at him.
Such a simple answer.
It should not have felt revolutionary.
“No,” she said. “I’m staying.”
Adrian reached them within minutes.
“Claire.”
“Adrian.”
He ignored Nathan.
“I need to speak to you.”
“You’re speaking.”
“Privately.”
“No.”
His jaw moved.
Then his gaze shifted toward Nathan.
“You have no idea what he’s doing.”
Claire stiffened.
Nathan remained silent.
“This isn’t about you,” Adrian continued. “Mercer has been trying to humiliate me for years. You’re just another deal to him.”
Still Nathan said nothing.
That irritated Adrian more.
“You think he suddenly cares about historic houses and whatever else you talk about? He cares because you were mine.”
Claire’s face changed.
Nathan felt it.
Adrian saw it and thought he had reached her.
So he pushed harder.
“He wants to win.”
Claire looked at Nathan.
Nathan met her eyes calmly.
No defense.
No claim.
No demand.
Just a question.
What do you want to do?
Claire turned back to Adrian.
Then something reckless moved through her.
Not revenge exactly.
Freedom often feels reckless when you have spent years asking permission.
She took Nathan by the tie.
Nathan’s eyebrows rose.
Claire whispered, “Help me end this conversation?”
His eyes darkened.
“Are you sure?”
That question.
Even now.
Even here.
She pulled him down and kissed him.
At first it was performance.
Three seconds meant for Adrian.
Maybe four.
Then Nathan’s hand settled against her waist.
Not possessive.
Steady.
His other hand touched her jaw with such care that Claire forgot the room.
She forgot Adrian.
Forgot the whispers.
Forgot why the kiss had begun.
Nathan kissed her as if he were listening.
And Claire—God help her—answered.
When they separated, her breathing was uneven.
Nathan looked at her, not at Adrian.
“You okay?”
Claire almost laughed.
Her eyes burned instead.
“Yes.”
Only then did she remember the man standing beside them.
Adrian’s face had gone white.
Something in him had broken.
Not because another man had touched Claire.
Because Claire had forgotten him while it happened.
“Get your hands off her.”
Nathan’s expression hardened.
Claire stepped forward.
“Adrian.”
“She’s using you.”
Nathan said nothing.
“She doesn’t even like men like you.”
“Nathan,” Claire said quietly.
He looked at her.
“I want some air.”
He nodded.
They turned.
Adrian grabbed Claire’s wrist.
Everything stopped.
Claire looked down at his hand.
Then slowly up at him.
“Let go.”
Adrian released her instantly, horrified by what he had done.
But the damage was already there.
Nearby conversations had died.
Brooke stood several feet away, staring.
A waiter carrying champagne had stopped in the middle of the room.
Adrian looked around.
Humiliation flooded his face.
“This is ridiculous.”
“Go home,” Claire said.
His mouth opened.
“Please.”
The word was quieter.
That was worse.
Adrian turned and left.
But he did not go home.
He went to his office.
He poured whiskey.
Then another.
Around midnight he opened his desk drawer and found Claire’s engagement ring.
He placed it on the desk.
For two hours he stared at it.

The following morning he called Claire eleven times.
She blocked his number.
