Chapter 8 - Letting Go of the Wedding Dress

A year passed.

There was no wedding.

Not yet.

People asked.

Claire’s mother asked gently.

Friends asked less gently.

Gossip columns briefly predicted dates before growing bored.

Nathan never asked again.

Not because he had changed his mind.

Because Claire had said someday.

And for once, waiting did not feel like abandonment.

It felt like space.

Adrian sold the apartment Claire had once helped him furnish.

He moved somewhere smaller.

He stopped monitoring Nathan’s company unless business actually required it.

He dated a woman for four months and ended the relationship when he realized he was repeating old habits.

It hurt her.

There was no miraculous transformation.

People do not become good simply because suffering teaches them a lesson.

Sometimes they merely become aware of how difficult goodness is.

Claire kept her old wedding dress for almost two years.

One rainy Sunday, she opened the box.

The silk was still beautiful.

She ran her fingers over the pearl buttons.

For a moment she saw the woman who had bought it.

Hopeful.

Patient.

Terrified of asking for too much.

Claire no longer hated her.

That surprised her most.

She had spent months feeling ashamed of the years she wasted.

But now she understood.

That woman had not been weak.

She simply had not yet learned that endurance and love were different virtues.

Claire sold the dress to a young teacher who came to her apartment with her sister.

The woman stood in front of the mirror wearing it, crying.

“It’s perfect,” she whispered.

Claire smiled.

“Yes.”

The teacher hesitated.

“Are you sure you want to sell it?”

Claire looked at the reflection.

May you like

For the first time, the dress did not look like hers.

“I’m sure.”
