Chapter 13 - THE RETURN

At four-thirty in the morning, the sky began to turn a faint shade of bruised purple.

Headlights flashed through the tall oak trees down the driveway.

I stood up instantly, running toward the grand foyer.

The double front doors opened.

Viktor walked in first, looking exhausted, his suit jacket wrinkled and splattered with rain.

Behind him came Mikhail.

His face was grim, but he was walking under his own power.

His coat was wet, and there was a dark smear of soot across his cheek.

When he saw me standing near the staircase, his tired face softened instantly.

"Elena," he called out softly.

I ran down the marble steps and threw my arms around his neck.

He held me tightly, lifting me slightly off my feet.

"You're back," I sobbed into his shoulder. "You're safe."

"I am safe," he reassured me, holding me tight.

"Is it... is it over?" I asked, pulling back to look into his eyes.

Mikhail nodded slowly.

"The O'Connor organization is no longer a threat in Chicago," he stated calmly.

"Liam O'Connor has fled the country."

"His lieutenants have surrendered."

"This city is quiet now."

"Nobody will ever threaten you again, Elena."

"Never."

I rested my forehead against his chest, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat.

"Thank you, Mikhail," I whispered.

He lifted my chin with his finger, looking deeply into my eyes.

"Do not thank me," he said softly.

"You gave me back my heart, Elena."

"Everything I did tonight... I did for us."

He leaned down and kissed me gently on the lips.

It was a slow, deep kiss filled with relief, passion, and promises of the future.

When he pulled back, he smiled warmly.

"Now... come," he said, taking my hand.

May you like

"There is something I want to show you."
