Chapter 8

Margaret eventually changed her plea.

The evidence made a full trial dangerous for her.

She admitted responsibility for the physical @ss/@ult against me and accepted a plea agreement involving incarceration, probation conditions afterward, mandatory counseling, and a strict no-contact order.

Other historical investigations continued separately.

When she was given an opportunity to address the court, Margaret stood.

For once, she looked small.

Not powerless.

Just small.

She turned toward Daniel first.

“I loved you too much.”

Daniel’s expression did not change.

“No,” he said quietly. “You needed me too much.”

Margaret flinched.

Then she looked at me.

I had imagined that moment hundreds of times.

I imagined shouting.

I imagined telling her exactly what she had taken.

I imagined making her feel one fraction of what I felt every time I walked past an empty nursery.

But when the moment came, rage did not arrive.

Only exhaustion.

Margaret began to speak.

“Emily, I—”

I raised my hand.

“No.”

The judge looked at me.

So did everyone else.

I stood.

“I don’t need an apology from you.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“You took something from me I can never recover.”

My voice shook.

“But you are not taking the rest of my life too.”

Daniel squeezed my hand.

I continued.

“You spent decades making everyone around you believe your anger was love, your control was protection, and your secrets were sacrifices.”

Margaret looked down.

“I won’t live inside your version of this story.”

May you like

Then I sat.

For the first time, Margaret had nothing to say.
