Chapter 12 - Shadows in the City

Six months had passed since the morning we walked out of the Moretti estate.
Our new life didn't begin in a penthouse or a sprawling suburban mansion. With the money Lorenzo had provided, I bought a modest, sun-drenched brownstone apartment in a quiet, leafy corner of Brooklyn. It had hardwood floors that didn't squeak, a kitchen with a modern stove, and a real bedroom for Mia, complete with pink curtains and a bookshelf stacked high with fairy tales.
I no longer worked through the sunrise. Instead, I enrolled in evening business classes at NYU, finally pursuing the accounting degree I had abandoned when life fell apart. Mia started preschool down the block, her backpack heavy with crayons and snacks, her gray stuffed rabbit sitting proudly on her pillow every afternoon.
Yet, the past was not something you simply washed off your hands with a new zip code.
One crisp Tuesday afternoon in April, as I sat at the kitchen island reviewing a textbook on corporate finance, the encrypted burner phone Lorenzo had given me buzzed against the marble countertop.
It was the first time it had rung in half a year.
My breath hitched. I picked up the heavy black device, my thumb hovering over the green answer button. I pressed it to my ear.
“Hello?” I said, my voice instinctively dropping into a cautious whisper.
“Clara,” a voice responded on the other end. It wasn't Lorenzo. It was Elena Whitmore.
“Elena? What’s wrong? Is Lorenzo okay?”
“Lorenzo is fine,” Elena answered quickly, though her tone was laced with high-stakes urgency. “Physically, he’s back to running the docks with an iron fist. But the legal fallout from Marco’s ouster is coming to a head, and you’ve been subpoenaed.”
My blood ran cold. The textbook slipped from my fingers, sliding across the counter.
“Subpoenaed?” I choked out. “By who? I thought Marco was gone!”
“Marco’s defense attorneys filed a federal motion this morning,” Elena explained rapidly. “They’re claiming Lorenzo’s recovery was medically impossible—that the medical records were falsified to execute a hostile corporate takeover of the syndicate. They’ve named you as the primary witness to the 'unauthorized breach' of the medical wing. If you take the stand in federal court next week, Marco’s legal team will tear you apart, expose your connection to the estate, and try to lock you away as an accomplice.”
I gripped the edge of the counter, the room spinning around me. “They can’t do that. I was just a cleaning woman!”
“In the eyes of federal prosecutors, you’re the woman who smuggled documents out of a crime boss's private safe,” Elena said grimly. “Lorenzo’s legal team is fighting it, but the judge demands your testimony. You’re scheduled to appear in federal court in lower Manhattan on Monday morning.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.
I stood in the quiet kitchen, the afternoon sun suddenly feeling cold and pale. The nightmare I thought I had left behind in the Moretti estate was reaching across the river, wrapping its cold fingers around my new life, threatening to drag Mia and me back down into the abyss.
