Chapter 9 - Caught in the Crosshairs

The door swung open, and Marco Moretti stepped into the study.

He froze. I froze, plastered flat against the dark mahogany bookshelf just a few feet away from him, my hand instinctively pressing against the heavy black ledger hidden in my apron pocket.

Marco’s sharp, predatory eyes narrowed as he took me in. His gaze flicked from my terrified face down to the heavy cart filled with linens, then back up.

“What are you doing in here?” Marco asked, his voice low, cold, and dripping with suspicion.

“I—I was ordered to collect the stray linens from the executive wing, sir,” I stammered, forcing my voice to maintain a semblance of frantic servant compliance. “Isabella said the study needed dusting before your meeting.”

Marco stepped further into the room, closing the door behind him. The air between us grew thick, suffocatingly tense. He didn't look like a man preparing for a routine corporate takeover; he looked like a predator who smelled blood in the water.

“Isabella didn't send you in here,” Marco said softly, taking a slow step toward me. “Isabella knows my standing order: nobody touches the executive study without my direct authorization.”

He reached out, his long fingers gripping the edge of my stainless-steel cart, stopping me dead in my tracks.

“You’re shaking, Clara,” Marco observed, a cruel, mocking smile touching the corners of his lips. “People only shake when they’re hiding something. Or when they’ve stolen something.”

“I didn't take anything, Mr. Moretti, I swear to God—!”

Before I could finish the sentence, Marco lashed out with blinding speed. He grabbed the front of my black apron, yanking me forward so hard my breath left my lungs in a sharp gasp. His other hand plunged deep into my apron pocket, his fingers wrapping instantly around the edge of the leather-bound ledger.

“Well, well, well,” Marco whispered, triumph flashing in his dark eyes as he pulled the ledger out into the dim light. “What do we have here? My brother’s private accounts.”

He looked down at me, his expression turning venomous.

“You’re working for Isabella, aren't you? Or worse... is Lorenzo somehow still pulling strings from that grave upstairs?”

“Let me go!” I cried out, struggling against his grip, but he was too strong, pinning me against the edge of the heavy oak desk.

“You stupid little bitch,” Marco snarled, raising his hand to strike me across the face.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the impact—

CRASH.

The heavy study door flew off its latch, slamming violently back against the oak paneling with a sound like a gunshot.

“Step away from her, Marco.”

The voice was raspy, weak, but carrying an absolute, terrifying authority that froze the blood in Marco’s veins.

I opened my eyes. Standing in the doorway, leaning heavily against the frame for support, was Lorenzo Moretti. He was dressed in a dark wool coat thrown over his hospital trousers, his face pale as death, but his dark eyes burning with an unholy, lethal fire. Behind him stood Elena and two towering, heavily armed security guards loyal exclusively to Lorenzo.

Marco dropped my apron as if I had burned his hand, stumbling backward a step, his jaw slack with absolute disbelief.

“L-Lorenzo?” Marco stammered, color draining entirely from his face. “How... you’re supposed to be—the doctors said you were brain-dead!”

“The doctors were wrong,” Lorenzo said, taking a slow, painful step into the room, his eyes locked onto his brother like a panther stalking a wounded deer. “And you, little brother... look like you’ve just seen a ghost.”
