Chapter 14 - The Preserved Dress

One month after the gala, you received a package.

No note inside. Just the blue dress, or what remained of it, delivered in a preservation box by someone on your former household staff who had apparently retrieved it from the grill after Adrian left. Burned at the hem. Smoke-stained. Ruined, but not fully destroyed.

You stared at it for a long time.

Then you took it to the atelier on Madison where old gowns and older damage were both treated with reverence. The seamstress looked over the silk, touched the blackened edge, and said, “This won’t ever be what it was.”

You smiled.

“Good,” you said. “Neither will I.”

Months later, at the next Vanguard Dominion gala, you wore the restored blue dress.

Not because it looked untouched. It didn’t. The atelier had transformed it, recut the skirt, reinforced the bodice, added dark crystal embroidery where the fire had eaten the original line. The old dress was still there, but altered into something stronger and stranger and far more beautiful than before. When you stood at the mirror, you thought: yes. That.

That is what survived.

And when you walked into the ballroom that year, no one looked for Adrian.

They looked for you.
