Chapter 9 - The Corridor

Every nearby conversation died completely.

Vanessa looked at Adrian with something like horror now.

Not because of his cruelty alone. Because she was quick enough to understand the scale of what was unraveling. The company was not simply embarrassed. It was moving institutionally. Promotions do not get suspended in a ballroom unless the room itself is intended to serve as witness.

You stepped closer to Adrian one last time.

His eyes were wet with a kind of disbelief you’d once have mistaken for pain. It wasn’t pain. It was the shock of a man learning that private contempt can trigger public costs if aimed at the wrong woman.

“You called me an embarrassment,” you said quietly. “And then you brought your future into a room my family built.”

He closed his eyes for one beat.

When he opened them, whatever plea had lived there died under the weight of the room.

Vanessa removed his hand from her waist.

She did it cleanly, almost elegantly, as if she had never really touched him at all. Then she stepped aside. Not for you. For herself. To make visible what she was no longer willing to share.

“Adrian,” she said softly, and it was astonishing how much contempt a polished woman could compress into one first name.

That was worse than any scream.

Security arrived then, discreet but unmistakable. Two men in black suits. No grabbing. No spectacle. Just containment. The kind reserved for executives whose bodies still belong to the company long enough for optics to be managed, but whose futures no longer do.

As they guided him toward the side corridor, the room parted.

He looked back once.

At you.

May you like

Not lovingly. Not apologetically. As if still, somewhere deep inside, he believed this could have gone differently if only you had stayed smaller.

You did not wave.
