Chapter 2 - The Truth Behind The Name

As the car pulled away, Mauricio was still standing outside the house believing I had nowhere better to go.

He had no idea I was heading back to the apartment I actually lived in.

I opened my computer in the back seat.

There was one detail from the wedding night that suddenly mattered far beyond our marriage.

Mauricio’s startup, NexoWare, had spent the previous six months trying to secure an investment of MXN 120,000,000.

He had talked about that money constantly.

He believed it would save the company.

He also believed the fund considering that investment belonged to a group of executives he had never met.

That part was almost true.

The investment was being evaluated by Horizonte Capital.

My fund.

The same organization Mauricio had never connected to the “poor administrative assistant” he had married.

I stared at the screen, my lip still throbbing where he had struck me.

Then I opened the pending investment file, and NexoWare’s name filled the screen.

NexoWare appeared across my laptop screen before the car had carried me very far from the house where I had just become Mauricio Ortega’s wife.

The company name looked different now.

For six months, Mauricio had spoken about that startup as though its survival depended on one final door opening.

He needed MXN 120,000,000.

And the fund reviewing whether that door would open belonged to me.

A few minutes earlier, he had laughed because he thought I couldn’t afford a decent apartment.

He had no idea where I was going.

He had even less idea whose investment file I was staring at.
