Chapter 3 - Why I Hid My Identity

My name is Valeria Cruz, and hiding the truth about my money had never been some elaborate game designed to humiliate anyone.
It had started with fear.
Not fear of being poor.
The opposite.
I had learned that once people knew how much money surrounded my life, it became difficult to tell where affection ended and opportunity began.
Horizonte Capital was not something I casually mentioned over dinner.
I chaired it.
The private fund managed investments worth billions of pesos, and that meant people often changed the moment they understood what my name could do for them.
They became more attentive.
More agreeable.
More interested in whatever I was interested in.
Sometimes they called it respect.
Sometimes it looked a lot like calculation.
So when Mauricio entered my life, I made a choice.
I introduced myself simply as Valeria Cruz, an administrative assistant.
I told him I rented a modest place.
I never described the apartment where I actually lived.
I never mentioned the meetings where decisions larger than Mauricio’s entire company could land on my desk.
I wanted one thing that money could not certify.
I wanted to know whether someone loved me when he believed there was nothing to gain from loving me.
For two years, Mauricio seemed to give me that answer.
He could be thoughtful.
He listened.
He remembered small details.
He did not push me about money because, as far as he knew, I did not have much.
There were dinners where we divided expenses without drama.
Ordinary errands.
Ordinary arguments.
Ordinary plans.
That normalcy mattered to me more than he ever understood.
I was not looking for a man impressed by Horizonte Capital.
I was looking for a man who would still be decent if Horizonte Capital did not exist.

For two years, I believed I had found him.
Then came our wedding night.
