Chapter 1 - The Entertainment

“If you dance this tango with me, I’ll marry you right here. In front of everybody.”

Ethan Caldwell said it loud enough for the whole ballroom to hear.

The band stopped mid-note.

Conversations snapped in half. Glasses froze halfway to lips. Then came the laughter. Sharp, rich, mean laughter that rolled across the room like it had been waiting for a target all night.

Every face turned toward the woman by the champagne table.

Her name was Elena Morales.

She stood there in a black server’s uniform with a pressed white apron and a silver tray balanced in both hands. Her shoulders were straight, but her fingers tightened around the edge of the tray so hard her knuckles lost color.

All evening, she had moved quietly through that old Charleston hotel ballroom like she was part of the furniture.

Now she was the entertainment.

“Yes, you,” Ethan said, swirling the drink in his glass. “Come on. Give us a show. Dance with me, and I’ll make you Mrs. Caldwell before dessert.”

A woman in diamonds let out a little snort.

“Oh, that’s priceless. The help marrying into the family.”

More laughter.

Elena felt it all at once.

The heat in her cheeks. The sting behind her eyes. The old, familiar ache of being looked at and not really seen. For one second, she wanted to disappear. To melt back into the wall. To let the moment pass like bad weather.

Then something rose inside her.

A memory.

A tiny apartment kitchen in San Antonio. Her mother barefoot on a cracked tile floor. Music playing from an old radio. Her mother smiling and saying, Don’t dance to impress people, baby. Dance because your heart doesn’t know how to stay quiet.

Elena lifted her chin.

The room still thought this was his moment.

It wasn’t.

She set the tray down.

The soft clink of glasses carried farther than the laughter had.

Something changed in the air.

Ethan grinned and held out his hand like a man calling a dog for a trick.

“So?” he said. “You brave enough?”

Elena walked toward him.

The laughter shrank.

She stopped a foot away, looked him directly in the eye, and placed her hand in his.

A murmur moved through the ballroom.

May you like

Ethan glanced at the band and snapped his fingers.

“Tango.”
