Chapter 2 - The Echo of a Memory

The musicians hesitated, then began.

The first notes slid into the room slow and smoky.

Ethan pulled her in too fast, too hard, already playing to the crowd. His smile was smug. His steps were showy. He was performing for applause that had always come easy to him.

He expected her to stumble.

She didn’t.

Elena moved like the music had been waiting years to find her again.

Her feet glided over the polished floor without hesitation. Her posture was clean, strong, effortless. She followed nothing. She matched him, answered him, then quietly took control of the space between them.

The smiles around the room began to fade.

Ethan tried a sharper turn.

She met it.

He pushed the tempo.

She stayed calm.

He tightened his grip, adding force where skill was missing.

She made it look graceful anyway.

Now nobody was laughing.

People leaned forward in their chairs. A few had stopped breathing altogether.

“That can’t be beginner’s luck,” someone whispered.

The music deepened.

Inside Elena, the ballroom disappeared.

There was only rhythm.

Only memory.

Her mother’s hand at the small of her back.

Her mother’s voice counting softly.

Her mother coughing in the next room during those last bad months, still insisting Elena keep practicing because some things mattered too much to lose.

After the funeral, Elena had stopped dancing.

Life got practical. Rent came first. Then long shifts. Then grief packed itself into a quiet corner and stayed there.

Until tonight.

Ethan’s confidence started to crack.

He felt it before anyone else did.

The room was no longer watching him.

It was watching her.

He forced a dramatic dip.

Elena slipped out of it and turned instead, clean and fast, her dark skirt sweeping the floor like a wave. The crowd gasped.

He tried another sequence, harder now, almost angry.

She answered with precision so sharp it made him look clumsy standing next to her.

What had begun as a joke was turning into something dangerous for a man like Ethan Caldwell.

The truth.

At the peak of the song, he yanked her toward him with more ego than control.

The room inhaled.

Elena pivoted.

May you like

One turn. Then another.

Then she stopped inches from him, perfectly balanced, her eyes steady, one hand lifted against his chest like she alone had chosen where this dance would end.
