Chapter 1

The applause echoed through the dining room as another bottle of vintage wine was uncorked.
Inside Manhattan's most exclusive restaurant, crystal chandeliers reflected across polished marble floors while soft jazz floated through the air. CEOs negotiated billion-dollar mergers over filet mignon. Politicians whispered in private booths. Celebrity couples posed for discreet photographs beneath candlelight.
To everyone watching, it was another perfect evening.
Until a man laughed loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear.
"There she is."
Nearly every guest turned toward the entrance.
A woman wearing a plain beige outfit stood quietly beside the hostess stand. Her hair was tied back in a simple low ponytail. No designer handbag. No expensive jewelry. No luxury heels.
She looked completely out of place among the tailored tuxedos and sparkling evening gowns.
Across the room, Ethan Caldwell smirked.
Three years earlier, Emily Carter had been the love of his life.
Now she was entertainment.
Ethan adjusted the sleeves of his perfectly tailored gray suit before walking toward her with his glamorous girlfriend, Vanessa Blake, clinging confidently to his arm.
Vanessa's crystal-covered evening dress glittered beneath the chandelier.
She looked Emily up and down before smiling.
"So..."
"This is the famous ex."
Emily remained calm.
"Good evening, Ethan."
He laughed.
"You still sound polite."
"That's cute."
Several nearby diners quietly watched the exchange.
Ethan folded his arms.
"I honestly thought you'd have figured life out by now."
Emily smiled faintly.
"I have."
He glanced at her clothes.
"Really?"
"Because it doesn't look like it."
Vanessa laughed.
"I've seen hotel staff dressed better."
A few guests shifted uncomfortably.
Emily said nothing.
That somehow irritated Ethan even more.
"You know why I left you?"
He didn't wait for an answer.
"Because ambition matters."
"Success matters."
"I couldn't spend my future dragging someone through life who thought clipping coupons was financial planning."
Vanessa squeezed his arm proudly.
"You upgraded."
Emily nodded slowly.
"I can see that."
Ethan leaned closer.
"I dumped you because you were poor."
His smile widened.
"And because you had absolutely no class."
Silence settled over the surrounding tables.
Some diners quietly looked away.
Others reached for their phones.
Emily looked into his eyes.
Not angry.
Not embarrassed.
Just... disappointed.
"You really believe that?"
May you like
Ethan shrugged.
"If the shoe fits."
