Chapter 3

Vanessa looked between them.
"Ethan..."
He ignored her.
Emily continued calmly.
"Tomorrow morning the board will vote on the executive restructuring plan."
His face drained of color.
"You can't..."
"I can."
"I'm legally obligated to protect shareholder value."
Ethan suddenly remembered every decision he'd made.
Inflated quarterly reports.
Aggressive layoffs.
Questionable expense accounts.
The executive dinners billed to clients.
The hiring decisions based on personal loyalty instead of performance.
Sweat appeared across his forehead.
Emily hadn't raised her voice once.
She didn't need to.
Power rarely does.
Vanessa finally found her voice.
"You're lying."
Emily smiled politely.
"Ask your waiter."
Vanessa turned instinctively.
Every waiter standing nearby lowered their eyes respectfully.
One quietly whispered,
"Welcome back, Ms. Carter."
Another added,
"We've missed seeing you in uniform."
Vanessa looked completely confused.
"Uniform?"
Emily nodded.
"I spent eleven months working here."
"As a hostess."
"As a server."
"As kitchen support."
"No one knew who I was."
She looked around the restaurant.
"I wanted to understand every job before leading the people doing it."
Several employees smiled proudly.
One elderly dishwasher standing near the kitchen doorway wiped tears from his eyes.
He remembered the quiet young woman who stayed late helping scrub pots after closing.
The one who insisted on learning every employee's name.
The one who secretly paid for another worker's medical bills after his wife became ill.
She had never acted like an owner.
She acted like a teammate.
Ethan suddenly remembered something.
Months earlier...
He had come to this very restaurant.
Emily had served his table.
He hadn't recognized her.
Instead...
He complained that his steak arrived three minutes late.
He demanded another bottle of wine.
He tipped almost nothing.
And before leaving...
He had told Vanessa...
"People like her should be grateful they even have jobs."
Emily remembered every word.
She simply never answered.
Until tonight.
Vanessa slowly released Ethan's arm.
"You never told me..."
He barely heard her.
His mind raced.
"My promotion..."
Emily nodded.
"I approved the recommendation."
His eyes widened.
"What?"
"Your department head believed you had leadership potential."
"I agreed."
"You earned the opportunity."
She paused.
"What you did afterward was entirely your choice."
The words struck harder than any insult.
Because they were true.
May you like
Emily hadn't ruined his career.
His own decisions had.
