Chapter 17 - Confrontation on High StreetThe bright glass facade of Hart & Flour Confections was bathed in the harsh red and blue strobe lights of arriving police cruisers.

Outside, a crowd of late-night pedestrians and local news trucks had already gathered. Two private security guards hired by Sterling stood at the front doors, holding drill kits, halfway through replacing the heavy brass door handles.
Richard Sterling stood on the sidewalk, dressed impeccably, holding a legal folder, talking smoothly to a local TV reporter.
"It’s a tragic corporate restructuring," Richard was saying smoothly into the microphone. "Miss Hart has proven unable to manage the financial scale of this enterprise, forcing the board to take immediate protective measures—"
"That’s enough lies, Richard!" my voice boomed through the damp night air.
The crowd gasped, and the news cameras whipped around as I stepped out of the police cruiser, flanked by Agent Miller and three state troopers.
Richard’s face paled for a fraction of a second, but he quickly recovered his polished facade. "Charlotte, please don't make a scene. This is a civil corporate matter. My legal team has filed an administrative takeover—"
"Your takeover is over," Agent Miller interrupted, stepping into the glaring lights of the news cameras. He pulled out a dark federal warrant from his jacket. "Richard Sterling, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit tax evasion, and illegal manipulation of corporate assets."
The crowd erupted into hushed whispers and camera flashes.
Richard stepped back, his eyes darting frantically toward his private security guards, who immediately dropped their tools and raised their hands, backing away from the building.
"This is ridiculous!" Richard shouted, his voice cracking as his carefully constructed world began to shatter. "On what evidence?"
"On the evidence of the hard drive retrieved from Ethan’s stash," I said, taking a step toward him, my voice cool, steady, and loud enough for every camera microphone to catch. "Every email you sent instructing him how to frame my business. Every shell company you used to buy his debt. It’s all over, Richard. The mask is off."

A state trooper grabbed Richard’s arms, pulling them behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs over his wrists.
The polished, powerful billionaire who had terrorized my life for months looked utterly powerless as he was forced into the back of a police car, his threats drowned out by the flashing lights and the roar of the city.
