Chapter 9 - The Phantom's LetterI didn't open the letter until I was back in the silence of my sunlit loft. The city below hummed with night traffic, but inside, the air felt suffocatingly heavy.

I sat at my kitchen island, a cup of chamomile tea cooling beside me, staring at Ethan’s messy, familiar handwriting. For months, I had blocked out any thought of him. He was a closed chapter, a villain locked away in a cell of his own making after trying to embezzle my life’s work and frame me for tax fraud. Yet, holding his words felt like touching a ghost.

I broke the seal.

Charlotte,

If you’re reading this, my mother actually managed to swallow her pride and find you. I know I have no right to ask anything of you. I know what I did to you, to your family, to your trust.

I am paying for it every single second. But the walls are closing in, Charlotte. Some of the men I owed money to before the arrest... they have associates in here. I’m not safe. But more than that, I can't sleep because every time I close my eyes, I see the look on your face the day the police took me away.

I don't expect forgiveness. I just need to tell you the truth about why I did it—about who really pulled the strings behind the fraud. It wasn't just me. It was someone in your circle now. Someone you trust.

Come see me once. Before it's too late.

Ethan.

I threw the paper onto the island, my heart hammering against my ribs. It's a play, I told myself sternly. It’s classic Ethan. A masterclass in manipulation, trying to sow seeds of doubt in my mind just as I reach the top.

The next morning, I threw myself into work, trying to drown out the noise of the letter. We had fifty thousand dollars worth of high-end corporate gift boxes to prepare, and the main kitchen was a flurry of flour, melted Belgian chocolate, and focused energy.

Around noon, Richard Sterling dropped by, impeccably dressed in a tailored navy suit. He walked into my glass-walled office with his usual aura of calm authority.

"The numbers from yesterday are staggering, Charlotte," Richard said, sliding an updated financial audit across my desk. "Your brand valuation has doubled overnight. I’ve already had inquiries from international investors who want to franchise Hart & Flour in Chicago and New York."

"Franchising already?" I smiled, forcing enthusiasm. "Richard, we just opened the downtown branch."

"Strike while the iron is hot," Richard said, his eyes sharp and calculating, yet warm. "You built an empire out of ashes, Charlotte. Don't let hesitation slow your momentum."

I looked at him—this powerful man who had stepped into my life when I was broken, providing the legal muscle and financial backing to crush Ethan’s countersuits. He had been my savior.

So why did Ethan’s words suddenly echo in the back of my brain? Someone in your circle now.

"Is everything alright, Charlotte?" Richard asked softly, catching the sudden flicker of shadow in my eyes. "You seem distracted."

"Just exhaustion from the launch," I lied smoothly, closing the folder. "I’m perfectly fine."
