Chapter 4 - The Perfect Moretti WifeMarriage changed almost nothing.

Which somehow changed everything.

Rachel still slept in the guest bedroom.

Daniel still knocked before entering.

They still argued about his coffee consumption.

But now Rachel wore a simple platinum band.

And Daniel looked at it far too often.

The public announcement created chaos.

Business publications wanted photographs.

Boston society wanted gossip.

Social media wanted to know how a billionaire freight executive had secretly married a hospital supply specialist nobody had heard of.

Rachel read one headline twice.

MYSTERY CURVY BRIDE CAPTURES BOSTON BILLIONAIRE.

She tossed the tablet onto the sofa.

“Captures?”

Daniel glanced up.

“Apparently I was roaming wild through Massachusetts.”

He returned to his laptop.

Rachel stared at him.

“Was that a joke?”

“No.”

“It was.”

“I deny it.”

Their strange marriage was becoming comfortable.

Then Celeste Avery arrived.

She brought clothing racks, stylists, shoes, makeup artists, and the quiet cruelty of someone who disguised insults as expertise.

“The foundation gala is important,” Celeste explained. “Daniel's wife will be photographed internationally.”

Rachel touched a dark green dress.

“I like this.”

Celeste smiled.

“Beautiful color. Unfortunately, that silhouette is unforgiving.”

Rachel's hand stopped.

Celeste moved toward another rack.

“We need structure.”

The word appeared repeatedly.

Structure.

Control.

Smoothing.

Correction.

Rachel initially resisted.

Then an email arrived from Daniel's corporate account.

Mr. Moretti wants a cleaner silhouette. Do whatever the stylist recommends.

Rachel read it three times.

Something inside her sank.

She had known the marriage was practical.

Still, Daniel had never made her feel ashamed of her body.

Until now.

At the next fitting, Celeste produced a rigid shaping garment.

Rachel frowned.

“That looks medieval.”

“It photographs beautifully.”

The first fitting hurt.

Rachel said so.

Celeste tightened it anyway.

“Beauty requires compromise.”

“I can't breathe properly.”

“You'll adjust.”

Rachel tried removing it.

Celeste's assistant stopped her.

“Mr. Moretti specifically approved this.”

Rachel froze.

“Daniel did?”

Celeste displayed a message on her phone.

Use whatever is necessary. Rachel represents the family now.

Daniel's name appeared beneath it.

Rachel swallowed her humiliation.

“Fine.”

At the gala, Daniel saw her descending the staircase.

He forgot the sentence he had been saying.

Rachel wore midnight blue.

Her hair fell softly around her shoulders.

She looked beautiful.

But something was wrong.

She moved too carefully.

“You okay?” he asked.

“Perfect.”

He hated that word immediately.

During dinner, Rachel barely ate.

Daniel noticed.

“You don't like the food?”

“Not hungry.”

Later, he gave a speech honoring medical workers who had protected Emma.

He surprised Rachel by mentioning her.

“My wife noticed what people with larger titles missed because she cared enough to look twice.”

Rachel stared at him.

Pride warmed his voice.

The contradiction confused her.

If he respected her so much, why had he ordered Celeste to reshape her?

By the time Rachel returned home, angry red marks surrounded her waist.

The next event was worse.

The garment was tightened further.

Rachel nearly fainted in the fitting room.

“Stop,” she gasped.

Celeste sighed.

“Rachel, Daniel expects—”

“Stop.”

Rachel ripped the garment loose.

But damage had already been done.

Over the following days, bruises appeared.

She hid them.

She also began avoiding Daniel's touch.

Meanwhile, Daniel became increasingly confused.

His wife stopped sitting beside him.

Stopped teasing him.

Stopped leaving tea near his papers.

Something had changed.

He assumed he had done something wrong.

He simply didn't know what.

Until the night by the harbor windows.

Until Rachel recoiled.

Until he saw the bruises.

Until she whispered:

“I thought you told them to.”

Daniel stood frozen.

Then he walked to the console and picked up his phone.

“Who?”

Rachel wiped her face.

“Celeste.”

Daniel dialed.

Celeste answered quickly.

“Daniel—”

“Did you put Rachel in compression garments?”

Silence.

“They were necessary for—”

“Did she tell you they hurt?”

Another silence.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Answer carefully.”

“She was uncomfortable.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at her.

“Did I authorize it?”

“Your office did.”

“My office is me.”

“I received emails.”

“Forward everything.”

He disconnected.

Rachel stared at him.

“You really didn't know.”

“No.”

The certainty in his voice shattered the last defense she had built.

Daniel stepped toward her, then stopped several feet away.

“Rachel.”

She looked up.

“I have never wanted you smaller.”

Her eyes filled.

“Not your body. Not your voice. Not your presence.”

He swallowed.

“Not any part of you.”

Rachel cried then.

Quietly.

Daniel remained where he was until she whispered:

“Can you hold me?”

He crossed the distance slowly.

His arms closed around her without touching the bruised area.

Rachel buried her face against his chest.

Daniel stared over her shoulder toward Boston Harbor.

Someone had forged his instructions.

Someone had hurt his wife.

May you like

And Daniel finally understood that the counterfeit machines and Rachel's bruises were not separate attacks.

They were part of the same war.
