Chapter 7 - Blood at the HarborThe old Moretti warehouse smelled of salt, rust, and rain.

Rachel wore a microphone beneath her coat.

Daniel listened from the adjoining building with Marcus and federal investigators.

The plan was simple.

Plans usually were.

Reality wasn't.

Victor entered alone at 9:06 p.m.

Rachel stared at the man who had welcomed her into the family.

He looked exhausted.

“Rachel.”

“Victor.”

His gaze moved around the warehouse.

“You shouldn't have come.”

“Neither should you.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You really are perfect for him.”

Rachel said nothing.

Victor reached inside his coat.

Daniel's hand moved toward his weapon in the surveillance room.

Victor withdrew a flash drive.

Not a gun.

“I have everything.”

Rachel stared.

“Everything what?”

“Transactions. Shell corporations. Evelyn's contacts. Payments.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because she ordered Emma's death.”

Victor's voice broke.

“I agreed to fraud. Smuggling. Bribes. God help me, I agreed to all of it. But Emma?”

He shook his head.

“She's my brother's daughter.”

Rachel studied him.

“Then testify.”

Victor laughed.

“You think she'll let me reach a courtroom?”

A sound echoed above them.

Daniel heard it through Rachel's microphone.

Marcus looked toward the monitor.

“Movement, second level.”

Then the lights died.

“Rachel!” Daniel shouted, although she couldn't hear him.

Gunfire exploded.

Rachel dropped behind a shipping pallet.

Victor fell.

Daniel ran from the surveillance room despite Marcus shouting after him.

Inside the warehouse, emergency lights flickered red.

Rachel crawled toward Victor.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

“Stay down,” he gasped.

Another shot struck metal.

Daniel appeared through the side entrance.

“Rachel!”

“Here!”

He reached her.

His hands moved over her shoulders.

“Are you hit?”

“No.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

Only then did Daniel breathe.

Federal agents flooded the building.

The shooter escaped through a service tunnel.

But Victor survived.

And the flash drive remained in Rachel's pocket.

It contained enough evidence to dismantle Evelyn Shaw's network.

Almost.

One folder was encrypted.

The file name:

MORETTI SUCCESSION.

Daniel stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

Victor, recovering under guard, provided the answer.

Evelyn had never simply wanted money.

She wanted Daniel removed.

Years earlier, Daniel's father had discovered Evelyn stealing from Moretti Freight and planned to expose her.

Then Daniel's parents died in what authorities classified as a highway accident.

Victor looked at his nephew.

“I think Evelyn killed them.”

Daniel went silent.

Rachel reached for his hand.

This time, he held hers immediately.

The encrypted file was finally opened at 3:17 the next morning.

Inside were photographs, insurance documents, vehicle maintenance records, and payments dating back fifteen years.

Daniel read until sunrise.

Then he walked onto the terrace.

Rachel followed.

“You don't have to say anything.”

Daniel stared at the water.

“My father trusted her.”

“I know.”

“My mother invited her to Christmas.”

Rachel remained beside him.

Eventually Daniel whispered, “I built my entire life around believing their deaths were random.”

Rachel touched his arm.

“What do I do with this?”

It was the first time Daniel had ever asked her that question.

Not his attorneys.

Not Marcus.

Her.

Rachel looked at him.

“You don't become what she made you.”

His eyes met hers.

“You let the truth destroy her. Not you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then pulled Rachel carefully against him.

For several minutes, they simply stood there.

A week later, federal warrants were issued.

Warehouses were raided.

Accounts were frozen.

Executives were arrested.

Evelyn disappeared.

Then Daniel received a photograph on his private phone.

Rachel sleeping beside him.

Taken through the penthouse window.

Beneath it were four words.

YOU TOOK EVERYTHING FROM ME.

Daniel looked toward the bedroom.

Rachel was still asleep.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

NOW I TAKE EVERYTHING FROM YOU.
