Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CRUISE AND THE CUSTODY BATTLE

Two days later, Vanessa contacted me.

She sounded terrified.

“Sarah, I need to tell you something.”

I asked her to speak honestly.

She explained that Eric had asked her to watch Lily during his vacation.

But according to Vanessa, he had described the arrangement as occasional visits, not continuous childcare.

“He told me you had hired someone to stay overnight,” she said. “I was supposed to stop by and bring groceries.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you ever confirm that another caregiver was there?”

Vanessa began crying.

“No. I should have. I assumed Eric had arranged everything.”

She explained that she’d been out of town for a family emergency and had not visited the house as planned.

I told her she needed to provide her account directly to the investigators.

She agreed.

The information raised additional questions about whether Eric had knowingly left Lily without reliable supervision.

But I refused to speculate.

I wanted the authorities to establish the facts.

Meanwhile, Eric’s cruise ended abruptly.

He returned home several days earlier than planned after receiving legal notices and learning that investigators wanted to speak with him.

I didn’t meet him at the airport.

I didn’t call to welcome him home.

I remained with Lily.

When he eventually appeared at the hospital, staff followed the applicable safety procedures and the restrictions then in place.

He was not permitted to simply remove Lily from my care.

He called me repeatedly.

I declined to speak without legal guidance.

Later, through his attorney, Eric claimed that he had never intended to abandon our daughter.

He insisted that he believed Vanessa and another caregiver would provide supervision.

He also disputed the allegations concerning the financial documents.

Those claims would need to be examined through the proper legal process.

But one fact was undeniable.

When I returned home, Lily was alone.

She was hungry.

She was frightened.

And the adult responsible for her care was enjoying a Caribbean cruise.

Several weeks later, Rebecca helped me obtain temporary court orders addressing Lily’s care and contact arrangements while the investigation continued.

The court considered the available evidence, including medical records, witness statements, and the circumstances surrounding my return.

I was grateful that Lily could remain in a stable environment with me.

We moved temporarily into a furnished apartment near the military installation while the house was cleaned and repaired.

I didn’t want Lily returning immediately to the place where she’d been so frightened.

The first night in our new apartment, she insisted on sleeping beside me.

I agreed.

She curled against my chest, holding the stuffed rabbit I’d purchased at the airport.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Did I do something bad?”

I kissed her forehead.

“No, sweetheart. You didn’t do anything wrong.”

She looked up at me.

“Daddy said I was too much trouble.”

I felt tears filling my eyes.

“Lily, taking care of you is never too much trouble. You’re a child, and grown-ups are supposed to keep you safe.”

She considered that for a moment.

Then she whispered, “Can you stay forever?”

I held her tightly.

May you like

“I’m going to do everything I can to keep you safe and make sure you know where I am.”

She fell asleep with one hand gripping my shirt.
