Chapter 6 - HEALING THE WOUNDS MY HUSBAND LEFT BEHIND

I stayed awake long after midnight.

I thought about all the nights overseas when I’d imagined Eric reading bedtime stories to her.

I thought about the photographs he’d sent.

I wondered how many moments I’d misunderstood because I wanted so badly to believe everything was fine.

But I also reminded myself that the responsibility for his actions belonged to him.

I had trusted my daughter’s father to care for her.

That trust had been violated.

Over the following months, Lily began receiving support from a child therapist.

At first, she struggled with separation anxiety.

She became frightened whenever I left the room.

She hid crackers beneath her pillow and asked repeatedly whether there would be enough food the next day.

Those behaviors broke my heart.

Her therapist explained that children who experience frightening disruptions may need time, predictability, and consistent reassurance to rebuild their sense of safety.

So we created routines.

Breakfast at the same time every morning.

A small snack basket she could access whenever she was hungry.

Bedtime stories.

A calendar showing my work schedule.

And a special phrase we repeated whenever she felt afraid.

“Mommy tells me where she’s going, and Mommy comes back.”

Slowly, the nightmares became less frequent.

Lily began laughing again.

She made friends at preschool.

She started drawing pictures of our apartment filled with bright colors and enormous smiling suns.

One afternoon, she brought home a picture of two people holding hands beside a house.

“This is us,” she announced proudly.

I smiled.

“It’s beautiful, sweetheart.”

She pointed to a small purple shape beside the door.

“And that’s Bunny. He’s our guard rabbit.”

I laughed for the first time in what felt like months.

Meanwhile, the legal investigations continued.

The financial records were reviewed, and the disputed documents underwent examination.

Some unauthorized transactions were eventually confirmed, while other allegations required additional evidence and legal proceedings.

Eric faced serious consequences arising from the child-neglect investigation and the financial matters.

I won’t pretend the process was quick or simple.

There were court hearings, interviews, legal expenses, and painful conversations about Lily’s future.

But I had one priority throughout everything.

My daughter would never again be left in a situation where her safety depended on someone who refused to take responsibility.

As the case progressed, Eric’s relationship with the woman from the cruise ended.

I learned that her name was Madison and that she’d believed he was separated from me.

According to the statement she provided, Eric had told her that Lily was staying with relatives while he traveled.

When she learned what had happened, she cooperated with investigators.

I didn’t blame her for my husband’s choices.

She hadn’t been responsible for caring for Lily.

Eric had.

Eventually, our marriage ended.

I didn’t celebrate the divorce.

I mourned the family I thought we had built.

I mourned the man I’d believed Eric was.

Most of all, I mourned the innocence Lily had lost when she discovered that adults didn’t always keep their promises.

But I also began to understand that rebuilding our lives didn’t require pretending the past had never happened.

It required facing the truth and creating something safer.
