Chapter 7 - Learning How to Be a Father

The paternity test later confirmed what Graham already suspected.
Piper was his daughter.
The legal process was complicated, but Graham received approval to care for Piper temporarily while Laurel recovered.
Keeping Wren with her required additional reviews.
Graham cooperated with every one.
His luxury condo was completely unprepared for children.
Within forty-eight hours, he had ordered furniture, safety gates, clothes, toys and enough toddler supplies to stock a daycare.
Piper hated it.
“You can’t buy your way into being my dad.”
The sentence hurt.
Graham put down the shopping bag in his hand.
“You’re right.”
Piper clearly hadn’t expected that response.
“I am?”
“Completely.”
He sat across from her.
“I don’t know how to do this, Piper.”
For the first time, she saw something other than wealth and confidence.
She saw fear.
“Neither do I,” she admitted.
So they learned.
Graham learned Wren hated having her food touch.
He learned Piper loved drawing and disliked math.
He learned both girls slept better when their bedroom doors remained open.
He learned money could solve transportation, bills and childcare.
It could not make Piper trust him.
That required showing up.
