Chapter 8 - The Woman He Almost Married

Audrey stayed away for nearly two weeks.
Then she asked Graham to meet her.
He expected her to return the ring.
Instead, she asked about Piper.
“How is she?”
“Angry. Confused. Smarter than me.”
Audrey smiled despite herself.
“And Wren?”
“She thinks my couch is a trampoline.”
Audrey laughed.
Then her expression became serious.
“I don’t know whether I can marry you anymore.”
Graham nodded.
“I understand.”
“Don’t make this easy.”
“I’m not trying to.”
Audrey’s eyes filled.
“Our life changed in twenty minutes.”
“I know.”
“I was supposed to marry a man with no children. Now you’re a father to a twelve-year-old, possibly helping raise her little sister, and your former girlfriend will always be part of your life.”
“Yes.”
Audrey looked down.
“I need time.”
Graham reached across the table.
“Take all the time you need.”
