Chapter 1 - The Confrontation

The silence in the dining room was suffocating.

Julian stood tall, his eyes burning with a cold fury that made even his security guards tense.

"You handled every invoice," Julian repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

Cordelia tried to maintain her rigid posture, but a bead of sweat rolled down her temple.

"Mr. Ashford, you are overreacting to a simple misunderstanding," she lied, her voice trembling slightly.

Julian signaled to Owen.

Owen stepped forward and dropped a thick stack of printed bank statements onto the polished oak table.

"Offshore accounts, Cordelia," Owen stated flatly.

"We found the transfers you made every week after selling my daughters' food to your black-market buyers," Julian added.

Blair broke down completely, sobbing into her hands and begging for forgiveness.

"I just did what she told me to do!" Blair cried out, pointing a shaking finger at the head housekeeper.

"She said we deserved the money because you were too rich to notice our little side business."

Julian felt a sickening twist in his gut.

He had built a fortress to protect his family from the outside world, completely blind to the monsters living inside his own home.

"Reid, lock the estate gates," Julian commanded.

"No one leaves this property today."

Cordelia's eyes went wide with sudden, sharp panic.

"You can't hold us here against our will!" she shrieked.

"That is kidnapping, and I will ruin your reputation in the press!"

Julian leaned closer, resting his heavy hands on the table.

"I am not kidnapping you, Cordelia."

"I am simply ensuring you stay right here until the police arrive."

He pressed a button on his secure phone.

Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder by the second.

The iron cradle was finally being broken open.
