Chapter 3 - Searching for the Spark

The next morning, the house was quieter than a tomb. Marlene moved through the kitchen with brisk efficiency, setting out my espresso as if nothing had happened, but the air felt entirely different. The veneer of perfection had cracked, and beneath it lay an emptiness I could no longer ignore.

I didn't go to the office.

Instead, I spent the morning sitting on the living room floor with Owen and Ellis. I didn't try to build rigid structures with the wooden blocks; I let them knock the towers down, laughing when the pieces scattered across the rug. I even found Elena’s old woven throw where Marlene had stuffed it into a bottom closet, dragging it out and draping it back over the arm of the chair.

When Marlene walked in with a stack of fresh linens and saw the blocks scattered across the floor, she stopped dead in her tracks.

“Mr. Hales... the cleaning schedule—compliance requires—”

“Marlene,” I interrupted, looking up from where I was helping Ellis push a toy car across the rug. My voice wasn't angry; it was calm, heavy with a finality that made her freeze. “I want you to take the rest of the week off. Paid, of course.”

She stared at me, her mouth slightly open. “Off? But who will manage the estate? Who will watch the boys?”

“I will,” I said simply.

Before she could protest, I stood up and walked to the hallway closet, retrieving her coat and bag. It wasn't an act of cruelty, but a necessary amputation. If I wanted my home to live again, I had to purge every remnant of the sterile prison I had built.

When Marlene finally left, closing the front door behind her with a sharp, indignant click, the house felt lighter. The air actually moved.

That afternoon, I loaded the twins into the back of the SUV and drove down to the small-town Vermont agency listing Marin had provided on her original, unpolished application. It took three hours of driving, but as I watched Owen press his nose against the car window, tracking the passing trees with wide, curious eyes, I knew I was heading in the right direction.
