Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Two weeks later, the estate in Westchester County looked unrecognizable.

The heavy, dark drapes that had kept the sunlight out for three years were pulled back permanently, flooding the rooms with golden afternoon light. Elena’s old photographs, once locked away in cardboard boxes in the attic, now lined the hallway walls, their smiling faces framing our daily lives.

I had stepped down as active CEO of my software firm, transitioning into a chairman role that allowed me to work from my home office, leaving my afternoons free.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the living room was once again filled with the sound of deep, helpless, breathless laughter.

I walked into the room carrying a tray of sliced apples, stopping in the doorway to watch. The sofa cushions were scattered on the rug again. Wooden blocks were strewn everywhere. And in the middle of it all, Marin was lying on her back on the rug, wearing a pair of bright yellow dishwashing gloves on her hands, fluttering them like wings.

“Higher, brave boys, higher!” she cheered.

Owen was standing on her stomach, wobbly and triumphant, while Ellis balanced against her hip, squealing with absolute delight.

This time, when I saw the yellow gloves, my chest didn't tighten with cold anger. Instead, a warm, unfamiliar lightness spread through me. I didn't see disorder; I saw life. I saw a home.

I set the tray down on the coffee table, walked over to the rug, and dropped down to my knees beside them.

Owen looked down at me, his eyes wide, hesitating for a second as if testing whether the old rules still applied. Then, with a bright, fearless grin, he reached down and grabbed my finger, pulling me into the pile of cushions.

“Daddy, fly!” Ellis giggled, patting my shoulder.

I looked across the pile of toys at Marin. Her eyes were bright, sparkling with amusement and a quiet, steady warmth that made the vast, empty spaces inside my chest finally feel full.

“Alright,” I laughed, the sound foreign even to my own ears, rich and real and completely unscripted. “Let's see how high we can go.”
