Chapter 15 - The Queen of Manhattan

-15-

The autumn wind returned to New York a year later, carrying with it the crisp, clean scent of falling leaves and a city reborn under new management.

On a bright October afternoon, I stood on the private stone terrace of the Greenwich estate, watching the sunlight dance across the golden leaves of the imported lemon trees.

Nico was toddling across the manicured lawn, his small sneakers crunching softly against the grass, chasing a red rubber ball while two federal security guards watched from a respectful distance with warm, protective smiles.

He had my eyes. Dark, piercing, and completely fearless.

A gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned to see Elena standing beside me, holding a warm cup of coffee and looking out over the peaceful estate.

“The annual Forbes philanthropic gala is tonight,” Elena reminded me gently. “They’re naming you Business Leader of the Year for your work in reforming municipal infrastructure and funding children’s hospitals.”

“I’ll be ready in an hour,” I replied, taking the coffee cup from her fingers.

“Are you ever going to look back, Serena?” Elena asked softly, her eyes searching my face. “Are you ever going to wonder what would have happened if Lucian had stayed... if he had chosen you that night instead of Bianca?”

I looked out past the iron security gates of the estate, past the winding country roads, toward the distant, glittering towers of Manhattan where an empire of fear had once stood.

“There is no ‘what if,’ Elena,” I said, my voice steady, warm, and utterly unshakeable. “The night my mafia-boss husband chose another woman while I gave birth alone, something inside me died before our son ever opened his eyes. But out of those ashes, I didn't just survive. I built a throne.”

I turned away from the terrace, walking across the marble floor of the conservatory to scoop my laughing son up into my arms, burying my face in his dark hair as he wrapped his tiny arms around my neck.

Let the underworld whisper its warnings. Let the old bosses rot in their federal cells.

In the city of glass and concrete, the crown had finally found its true ruler.
